I liked it, it just got just about no spotlight. I don't know what Japan generally thought of it though.
If by "spotlight" you mean the magazine advertising it, it only does that with series that are within the first 8 weeks (which are unranked weeks - and you can tell the editors wanted it to succeed by how they were placing it) and series that have a high amount of popularity.
So its lack of popularity caused it to receive no extra spotlight and no recourse for recovery.
It also "helps" that Jump is hitting a critical mass of popular series. The only unpopular series that's ranked and currently running that isn't from the new batch is Soul Catcher(s), which appears to be pulling a magico (survive a full year at the bottom out of sheer luck). And I expect that to go next, TBQH. (haven't checked this week's data)

I enjoyed this series from beginning to end. The combat was clever enough to hold my interest for as long as it lasted. Despite that, I can see some major problems with it that likely contributed to its cancelling. The biggest would be the villains. Basically, the premise was that some people are just bad. Completely, irredeemably bad. Why? Because they are. There's something fundamentally different about them, and that thing directly allows them to gain a monstrous power. That's all it takes for human civilization to fold in an instant.
It's shallow, and it feels unreasonably unfair.
To be fair, it's only a few chapters in. There may have been other reasons behind why some changed and some didn't.
We still don't know why Teppei and Yuki didn't go nuts.
And it seems we never will.
One Strip! One Strip! There are also some areas which could have been improved in terms of storytelling. <shrug> Sucks that this had to go, though.
@Handsome Rob Fairy Tail isn't even serialized on Shounen Jump!
New chapter:
Goblin controller can not only make them combine, but also merge them with a Tank. That's kinda unfair.
One Strip! One Strip!Wow. This comic still exists.
Maybe they were posted elsewhere a long time ago, but here are two new chapters.
Reading both right now.
One Strip! One Strip!...only two new chapters since you last posted a year ago? Was it canceled after all?

It is, indeed, long over. It didn't switch magazines or anything. Scans must have just fallen behind.
And another three chapters.
I will chronicle the adventures of the Iron Knight right until the end.
One Strip! One Strip! The new baddie has a cool design. And I got chills when he commended our little hero for playing his part. Damn.
Final chapter:
.....It kinda just happened. Some of it seemed rushed, but that's to be expected. There was a lot to wrap up.
An Iron Knight, even in death.
One Strip! One Strip! There's supposed to be an extra chapter bundled with the volume release, I think, so it's not really the end yet.
Well, I just completed chapter 11 to the epilogue.
I...like this manga. Even if it was rushed, I got what was going on. And the final moments of the manga plus the epilogue melted my heart...
This coulda been a contender, but alas it was not...
Ouch.
Is this series not as good as I think it is, or is something else going on here?
Cause I like this.
One Strip! One Strip!
