Ukraine protests: Thousands march through capital- over 100,000 by some counts
Ukrainian protesters besiege government building
Clashes amid huge Ukraine protest against U-turn on EU
Over 300,000 defy protest ban in Ukraine- "Fierce clashes erupt after protesters take to streets again, chanting "revolution" as anger against government grows."
What started as a protest against the decision not to sign an agreement with the EU seems to have escalated into a "Color Revolution" or "Arab Spring" style movement to force the government to resign. By some reports, the police are using violent tactics to suppress the street protests.
The Western half of the Ukraine has historically felt closer to Europe , and wants to move Ukrainian society in that direction. Eastern Ukraine feels culturally closer to Russia, and favors closer relations with that country. The current regime of President Viktor Yanukovich is part of that camp. The current confrontations can be seen as a clash between these two halves of Ukrainian society.
EDIT (2/24/2022)
This thread was originally opened in 2013 during the beginning of the revolt in Ukraine that eventually over-threw the dictatorship of the Yanukovyich regime and instituted democratic elections soon afterward. As of this writing, in the aftermath of the Russian invasion that began on 2/23, it is not clear whether or for how long Ukraine will continue to exist as an independent country.
Statements made nine years ago still seem relevant: "The Western half of the Ukraine has historically felt closer to Europe , and wants to move Ukrainian society in that direction. Eastern Ukraine feels culturally closer to Russia, and favors closer relations with that country... The current confrontations can be seen as a clash between these two halves of Ukrainian society." Some people have expressed the view that the confrontation between Russia and Ukraine, beginning in 2014, never really ended.
The invasion is also a result of certain grievances proclaimed by Vladimir Putin, the current President of Russia, and used by him as justification for armed attack and occupation. Western governments, and others around the world, have joined together in condemnation of this attack.
While we do not know what the ultimate outcome of these events will be, this thread will continue to be made available as a place to record news, ask questions and express opinions about the "Crisis in Ukraine."
This map will help track the latest developments.
Do not post anything about the Ukrainian military movement and strategy. This could actually result in casualties.
No discussion regarding nuclear war. As nuclear weapons are not being used by either side, nuclear war is off-topic.

Fulcrum has a commentary of Southeast Asian volunteers fighting in the legion. There's an exception to this as one Vietnamese man is serving with the regular Ukrainian military after he was given Ukrainian nationality (He'd also avoid jail time in case Vietnam wants his ass hauled off).
Russian MOD has a Telegram list of KIA volunteers.
They list the following from SEA: Philippines (17 volunteers, two “eliminated”); Indonesia (ten volunteers, four “eliminated”); and Thailand (three volunteers, one “eliminated”).
"Exit muna si Polgas. Ang kailangan dito ay si Dobermaxx!"Most Vietnamese do get mandatory military training, so at least the Vietnamese-Ukrainian should know how to handle an AK.
Where there's life, there's hope. One thing though is that news of his enlistment made it on non-Vietnamese gov’t news last year.

Vietnamese article on Nguyễn Lâm Tùng.
Says that his family moved to Ukraine 14 years ago (13 when the article was published in 2023). He enlisted after he saw a lot of dead bodies, especially in Bucha. And he said that he got married to a Ukrainian.
He also enlisted since he's angry at Russian disinformation aimed at Ukraine. He and his Ukrainian buddies get donations (money/gear) from fellow Vietnamese in Europe who are against the invasion.
Nguyen said that he's fortunate to have training in Soviet/NATO tactics.

- Russia continues to engage in anti-immigrant measures.
- Russia made limited gains.
- Storm-Z personel complain about poor treatment.
I honestly hope their ultranationalist, anti-immigrant rhetoric will bite Russia in the rear. And, I hope their attempts at blaming the West and Ukraine will fizzle out.
I will become a great writer one day! Hopefully...Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, March 28, 2024
- Russia made limited gains.

Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, March 29, 2024
- Russian Orthodox Church Moscow Patriarchate approved an ideological document. It calls the current war a holy one. Unification with compatriots abroad and unification of "Russian World" including Belorussia and Ukraine. Further, it calls for restoration of "family values". It calls for revival of traditional large families. Immigration is to be restricted.
- Ukrainian commander in chief stressed that material shortages are forcing Ukraine to defensive.
- Russia vetoed renewal of UN panel monitoring North Korea's adherence to sanctions on March 28th.
- Russia pressured Telegram to censor messages calling for terrorist attacks.
- Russia made limited gains.
The Russian Orthodox Church's patriarch is already full Putin. No surprise there.
"Exit muna si Polgas. Ang kailangan dito ay si Dobermaxx!"Is that…normal?
Trans rights are human rights. TV Tropes is not a place for bigotry, cruelty, or dickishness, no matter who or their position. For the Russian Orthodox Church? Pretty much.
Welcome to Estalia, gentlemen. Why yes, it is quite normal for local religions to be co-opted by the current rulers of a state. Of course, occasionally the religious organisations had the power to reverse those roles, but I don't think most Christian churches do these days.
The Russian Orthodox Church also has been a state asset for a long time by now - heck, they used to be basically a subsidiary of the KGB back in the Soviet Union, if I recall correctly.
Welcome to Estalia, gentlemen.Yeah, that was what I meant, is that normal for the Russian Orthodox Church.
Also, really? About the “they used to be basically a subsidiary of the KGB back in the Soviet Union” part?
Trans rights are human rights. TV Tropes is not a place for bigotry, cruelty, or dickishness, no matter who or their position.Well, perhaps not a subsidiary, since religion was outlawed in those days. Remember how you'd hear funny stories about how KKK member lists were like 80% undercover FBI agents and informants? It was kind of like that.

Ukrainian Border Guard announced that some villages in the northeast part of Kharkiv were retaken after Russian troops abandoned their positions.
"Exit muna si Polgas. Ang kailangan dito ay si Dobermaxx!"Didn't that happen more than a year ago?
https://twitter.com/nexta_tv/status/1774075944598225171
It's only the villages of Peschanoye, Degtyarnoye, and Shabelnoye. The Border Guard called it a "gray zone" since it's near the Ukrainian-Russian land border.
"Exit muna si Polgas. Ang kailangan dito ay si Dobermaxx!"Maybe they now finished demining them.
This is actually slightly worrying considering recent Russian narratives about Kharkiv, Russia's giving a very strong internal info-op that they're planning on going after Kharkiv again and this pull back could be done in order to lure Ukrainians forwards into less defended positions.
Or Russia plans to take those villages back in the near future and this is them preparing the ground so when they take it back the Russian propagandists can claim that was the Kharkiv offensive.
