I've come across a few fics that, like dotHack or Sword Art Online, focus on interactions in an online game. But I've found precious few of them. Not long ago I asked about what Super Smash Bros would be like as an MMO. Some of these fics answer that question.
While not technically a written fan fic, Smashtasm, a machinima series, is in the realm of fan fiction. It covers what Super Smash Bros might be like in a server-based format, following a player who is after another player, which leads to a conflict with a notorious hacker.
Inspired by that series, I found a fic called "Super Smash Brothers Melee ONLINE" that extended that concept, imagining SSB Online as a roleplaying game with classes and races to select from.
I haven't had much luck finding anything similar to that. Normally, if you search "online" on a fan fiction search engine, you'll end up with dotHack or Sword Art Online, and while I'm fond of both series, I'm looking for something that goes beyond those franchises. That, or you'll find "chat room" fics.
