So I had an idea for an adrenaline junkie hero that I really like. Someone who became a hero for the thrill of saving people eventually becomes so powerful that he just becomes disillusioned with it all (yeah I know, original right?)

However, he differs from someone like Saitama in that he tries dealing with the boredom by setting self-imposed challenges, like saving x number of people in y amount of time. For obvious reasons, turning other people's safety into a game is risky business, and while no one gets hurt at first, eventually he gets so bored he ends up orchestrating his own "disasters" just so he can get a challenge out of it. Again, no one has actually died yet because of this guy, but it's accepted almost as fact by the few people who do know he's doing this intentionally that he's going to hurt someone eventually.

My struggles are these. Am I making it too hard for the audience to sympathize with this guy by giving him flaws like this (I mean every hero needs flaws, but I can understand how this set in particular might make this guy out to look like a jackass)? When I actually introduce the real villain (who is plenty evil in a far more genuine way), would it seem hypocritical or even out of character for the hero to be upset by their actions?

Maybe make the guy actually want to save people genuinely, and just need the rush so bad that he's committing crimes, thinking if no one dies he can get away with it?

Really, so long as he doesn't think his acts are completely right, he can be an anti-hero.

Well that much is true. He does genuinely want to save people, but he feels like he's getting into a rut in his life, and that it's fine if he toys around as long as no one gets hurt. But could I get away with playing this for comedy?
