What with Na No Wri Mo winding down, I was wondering if anyone would be interested in starting a reading/critique group for the novel length works of fellow tropers. I know we have a Constructive Criticism thread, but that’s geared more towards smaller works, and every time I’ve seen someone post a link to their more complete work in the general threads it tends to sink very quickly. The idea here would be to build up a group devoted to completing and offering comments on longer works, with the knowledge that their own works will receive similar treatment eventually.

My rough idea is that each month a new person would post a link to their work (Complete of course, and hopefully somewhat polished). During that month the other members of the group would read their work. You wouldn’t be obligated to post a critique of each chapter, but comments on certain parts of the story or discussion on how things are going so far would be encouraged. When you finally finish, each reader would be expected to write up a critique of the work as a whole. After the month is over, the focus switches to another person’s work. I’m thinking a new thread could be created each month, so any last minute conversations or critiques could be posted without distracting from next month’s work.

The first few rounds would have to be done in good faith, of course, but the idea would be that eventually in order for your story to be read you would have to have already done several critiques yourself.

So, the purpose of this thread is just to gauge interest in this or a similar idea. What does everyone think? Would anybody be interested in participating in a group like this? Would we have enough works to last more than a few months? (It wouldn’t have to be your Na No Wri Mo piece of course) Is a month even a long enough time for most others to devote to reading a novel length piece of work? And, most importantly, are there people willing to read/critique other works?

I'm conflicted. Personally I don't think it would work, simply because we're having a hard enough time getting people to critique more than a few paragraphs. I don't think many people would have the time and attention to read a full novel unless they already had some reason to be interested in it.

However, I think a good idea would be to make a "Troper Work of the Month" as sort of a Hall of Fame - we pick one outstanding Troper Work each month, highlight it, and discuss it.
