That's the general reception to Wish. It's decidedly "mid". It's not the worst Disney movie ever, but it's nothing really special.

Which in a vacuum wouldn't be that bad. It's just that Disney deliberately hyped it up as their 100th anniversary film. So expectations were heightened.

The main actual issues with Raya, Wish and Turning Red is the morals are very badly delivered. Which is not a general point for modern Disney outlet even when they try delivering a message, as they worked fine in Zootopia and Encanto. But the former three are skewed on terms of entitlement between sides. Like you almost can get the point of the side the narrative is trying to support, but then they fall under scrutiny as Protagonist-Centered Morality (and to a degree, antagonist centered morality in the case of Raya).

I guess I can understand why people didn’t like the ending to Ralph Breaks the Internet since I’ve gotten used to the idea of Vanellope being the closest friend of Rancis, Candlehead and Taffyta (even before King Candy aka Turbo messed it all up), but what can I do?

[up][up]Now that I've seen Wish, I can't even tell what the moral was supposed to be. "You should work to make your own wish come true rather than relying on someone else" would have been pretty solid, but the ending sure didn't fit that.

[up][up]No, the problem most detractors have with it is that Vanellope pretty much goes Turbo in all but being called out for it, thus going against the message of the original.

[up] I had to think long and hard about that one, and I THINK I figured out how the movie got away with breaking that long-established rule: remember that Sugar Rush's feature is the "daily random roster"? So the players would figure that Vanellope just isn't available for the remaining days that the arcade would stay open for, plus since her glitch-power is technically a beginner-friendly ability (like how bowling alleys have the option to include bumpers so you don't get a gutter ball at all, or Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and a recent update for F-Zero 99 having "smart steering"), maybe not having her in the game will make the players actually choose a racer that can't teleport to the front every time.

...yeah, I'm trying to see the bright side. I'm no critic.

If Wreck It Ralph were to get a third movie... what route do you guys think it'd take? I'm of the opinion that the first film's moral will be reconstructed, hypocritical though that obviously sounds... and for one reason, and one reason only: Pixar's evidently bringing Woody back for Toy Story 5. He can't have left his fellow toy buddies in 4, only to then be a major character in 5, without some hypocrisy along the way.

Likewise, I'm thinking that the hypothetical third movie would inevitably feel compelled to say something about Venelope, and if what she did would have been right or not.

By the way, I just realized, wouldn't Vanellope's inclusion in "Slaughter Race" raise suspicions from whatever company(s) own Sugar Rush (as Litwak said that they went out of business years ago so he couldn't just order a replacement part from them)? Or how Ralph's viral videos don't seem to get attention from Fix-It Felix, Jr.'s owner(s)? (I say plural because I THINK a franchise can get split up when its assets are sold off, IDK, someone explain copyright to me but make it simple because I'm easily distracted)

[up] Mostly I just play in first person because I find it easier to control.

And going back to the movie, would Vanellope's game-reset affect the Cy-Bugs even if Ralph didn't wipe them all out? My sister was wondering that when I showed her the movie back in 2013.

Another fridge horror I just realized: if characters die because they're outside their games, what happens if the arcade gets hit by a lightning storm and the power goes out?

Sorry if I talk a lot about this movie, I used to be quite obsessed with it when it was first revealed back in 2012 (making it the one year I was excited for a movie more than a video game). But me seeing it on Disney+ the other night kinda reignited my interest and also made me question the worldbuilding.

Toy Story 5 will be about Bonnie having grown up, and Woody coming back to tell Buzz and the others to join him and Bo Peep in helping other lost toys.

I dunno... 🤷

@Tom Without Jerry: The problem with Turning Red wasn’t the moral, which was perfectly fine and everything, but how much people refused to relate to a teenage girl undergoing puberty in the 00s. From the way they acted about a girls natural interest in boy bands, the fact she was raised by an overbearing and controlling mother who was likewise raised by one, acting like it’s the worst thing ever that a movie discussed a girl undergoing puberty and her first period, etc.

Not even touching the insane takes like why the movie wasn’t obsessed with 9/11.

In short, a meaningless moral panic by parents who are not so different from the protagonist's mother.

I was a teen girl with a difficult relationship with her mother in the 2000s so turning red was absolutely my jam. Just replace boy bands with Pokemon as the obsession my mom couldn't understand. Lol

Turning Red is a movie I acknowledge as totally awesome... But cant really watch myself. The mom being so embarrasing is just too unbearable to me. Movies shouldnt just appeal to me, they need to tell their message and reach the people the message resonates with.

I can relate to adolescents thinking their adolescent affairs are the would-be end-of-all because I was there, but I also look back and realize that if someone had strongly made clear back then to me that they were just adolescent affairs and that I should have grown out of arrested emotional development much sooner then my life would be much better off now.

Because wasted time is the only wasted thing that cannot be regained.

I don't know, it may sound harsh, especially to those who are undergoing youth right now, but maybe we are underselling the 'you should just grow up' message nowadays? Because, from personal experience, I wasn't given enough of that and now I'm regretting it, since I honestly think it would have made me a better, more capable, more responsible person and also far less selfish.
