That's assuming Cardin's team would have respect for the star academy team - until they change their attitudes, the only role-models they'd be looking for would probably be in the same mould they began in. Besides, I still maintain her decision to turn the other cheek to a bully that's from a lower year group was a realistic one.

I'm more interested in the adult characters of the show than the students, so I wouldn't mind seeing some non-academy hunters myself.

I know and seen in real life sometimes smart boxers, wrestlers, MMA, or any other professional fighters or soldiers, when being bullied in a bar or mugged on the street, are much rather just shrug it off, allow themselves to be bullied, go with the aggressor's demand, etc. They don't use physical force even though they are perfectly capable of, because they'd rather preserve their strength or/and not get in trouble with the authorities.

But Velvet in volume 1? No, that wasn't turning the other cheek; she simply has no strength, be it either physical or mental, to response against that. The whole Team CFVY is nothing but a retcon, simply reinforced by fan's demand.

Yeah, I mean they pretty much admit as much. Velvet was suppose to be a one off character that the fans took a liking to so they put her on a team.

I'm just criticizing the writers for resorting to a rather conspicuous retcon, a mark of bad writing, just to meet fan's demands.

Then again, they are bad writers. I certainly don't watch this series for good writing.

Actually, Ninety could have a point when he says "warrior". Martial culture in ages past was pretty liable to regard such threats as a matter of honour that true warriors should never abide.

Of course, I'm really just having fun with a guess rather than saying this is for certain the case in the RWBYverse.

Eh, I have no obligation to say nothing but nice things about them and I'm pretty sure my points of criticism were valid enough.

Also, notice how even though Team RWBYJNPR, even if it was just a joke, got into a fight large enough to cause property damage, they got no repercussion whatsoever. It's fair to assume that there's no real consequence of getting openly into a fight in the school, so Velvet has even less excuse for not fighting back if she really does have the strength to do so.

or maybe she does it for moral reasons, IE beliefs compel her not to act in certain ways

or like you said, She was written to be a freshman new meat that later got a rewrite later down the line.

Outside of peaceful protests, which is NOT what Velvet is doing, moral reasons (principles would be a better word, btw) that compel you to act like a pushover is a completely worthless ones.

Which is, again, a bad writing.

Considering the warrior culture and lax rules (or at least their enforcement) going on in Beacon, it would make even more sense for her to retaliate against him, because letting underclassmen bother you would be a serious dishonor to your team.

Speaking of cultures, despite some similarities to our own, we don't know much about the actual cultures of Remnant.

Sure, they may be mix and match of the stuff we have, but I think there's more to it than what we see (kinda obvious, though)

You know what I think? Velvet's situation is like 1950s USA where black people were (and still, unfortunately) treated like absolute shit. If she retaliates, it might make things worse for her and any other Faunus in Beacon.

I wonder what classes there are in Beacon?

I don't even need to see what each of them are like, I wish that in season 3 with learn what kind of classes there are. It shouldn't even take any more than 20 seconds or so.

Have I missed some side materials? If not I'll write your name in list of people who pull facts out of their ass. Sure they are training to fight monsters and have tournament coming, but there is no indication in story proper Beacon is school of Klingons. Frankly I don't see this warrior culture you are throwing around.
