So it sold 7 million units in two weeks, and then not another one since?

The numbers are as of April.

There's no way Sony sold 7 million systems at launch.

[up][up][up]

You'd be surprised at how many people buy into things in anticipation of future releases. That goes for The Last of Us and E3. And gamers make up a large chunk of the "general public" that buys game consoles. I think you'll be surprised when Sony next announces their sales numbers.

I know. I'm pointing that out.

And no, I don't think E3 and an upcoming HD version of The Last of Us are going to boost sales by that much. The Last of Us: Remastered is for people who already have PS4s and didn't have PS3s. It's not going to convince people to buy a PS 4 on its own.

And I think it will, but neither of us can prove it one way or another.

By itself, it probably won't, but it will likely help convince people to buy a PS 4. Like myself, for example; I didn't buy it at launch because I honestly wouldn't have played on it that often. However, there is now a sizable enough selection, with more games, T Lo U included, in the coming months, that I feel justified in ordering the Destiny bundle.

Ah, but pre-sales don't get counted until they're actually sold.

Obviously. I was trying to point out that while The Last Of Us won't make a major impact like a proper Killer App would, it will at some point contribute as a factor in future sales.

Bah, I shouldn't post when my medicine makes me sleepy, I just make a fool of myself.

Alright, I made a mistake and read the release of that article wrong. I still think 8 million isn't completely out of reach.

The Xbox One "doubled" (no idea what that means exactly) their sales in the United States this June, coinciding with the Kinect-less bundle. The PS 4 still beat it.

There's still GTA 5 and Assassin's Creed: Unity having a solid release date. I think 8 million looks very possible.

Meh.

The only one on there I might be interested in is Fez, and I won't play it on the principle that Phil Fish is a dick whom I don't wish to give money to.

I've heard that about him but I never really got the full story. For what I heard he got as good as he gave.

Personally I'm a firm believer of the consumer making purchases based solely on the creator's end product rather than the creators personal qualities. But I can understand how people would find it hard to separate their feelings towards the creator from the game.

There's a video out there where he's doing a panel Q&A and says straight to the face of a fan who is a Japanese amateur game developer that all Japanese games are terrible.

I don't like the guy, and I won't support him. I also elected to not participate in the Amalur clusterfuck when that was on PS+. If it's a game that I'm only somewhat interested in, I'll let my personal feelings inform my decision. I don't have time to play everything, and that's as good a reason not to play something as anything else.

Considering the way he was publicly insulted by alleged professional game journalists he retains my sympathies.

Personally speaking I loved FEZ so I think you're missing out.

And then he threw a tantrum and quit the industry. Guy's a toolbox.

But this is off-topic.

So the Playstation Now game streaming service just got into open beta a few days ago, and so far, first impressions are pretty mixed. Some people are running into streaming issues, though when it works apparently it works very well, and the pricing model has seen a lot of criticism from many people, including Jon Tron. He said on Twitter that it sucked and various games have rental prices that are too high (such as Final Fantasy XIII-2 being priced at $4.99 for 4 hours and $29.99 for 90 days), and others have noted that this is because publishers are given free reign in setting their prices, so they could set them as high or low as they please.

Anyone else used it? If so, please share your impressions of it so far.

I'm not interested until there's a subscription-based pricing model. Let me pay a flat rate and I can rent whatever I want for as long as I want for a year.

IGN's stance on the service is that the only rental period where the price is worth it is weekly, and not for every game.

You can always just, like, not rent something if the price is too high. Same goes for purchasing things. Either the publisher sees no demand today and lowers their prices immediately, or the publisher sees no demand in a year and lowers their prices then. Never really understood why people demand that non-essential goods be available immediately and cheaply instead of practicing some zen in their lives.

Or they take it off of the shelf completely, and everybody loses.

that's such an illogical defeatist attitude

until physical discs become extinct, it's still legal to buy/trade/give used games, so pulling things from shelves won't make everyone lose—at worst, it's a zero sum game.

if they do become extinct, a medium-to-big name publisher won't pull titles just to spite everyone because it reflects poorly on their brand. also, space is super cheap, and only getting cheaper. bandwidth is the main price bottleneck, and if something is not being sold, then it's not using bandwidth. if they do decide to pull a title to spite everyone, they will not go after people downloading a copy because it will be a death sentence to their brand.

if a small publisher pulls something from their shelves, then they don't understand the economics, they don't care, or they're poor. if they don't care or are poor, they won't/can't hire a lawyer to go after you when you download a copy. if they don't understand the economics, they are too stupid to hire a good lawyer to go after you when you download a copy.

and if you really think you'll be the .0000000001% that gets prosecuted given those scenarios, also keep in mind that entertainment is not required to stay alive.

Sony is teasing a big showing at Gamescom. Since Microsoft will be there too this year with their own conference, they kind of have to.

Their conference is on the 12th, 10:00 AM PDT, 1:00 PM EDT, 6:00 PM BST, and 7:00 PM CEST.
