A Proposal:

WHEREAS 2012 was perhaps the best year ever for superhero, science fiction, fantasy, and otherwise geek-themed movies; and

WHEREAS said movies are greatly underrepresented at the 2013 Academy Awards;

THERE SHALL BE HELD, in TV Tropes Forums, a Geek Oscars to determine, by popular vote, which of the geek movies of 2012 are considered to be best in the different Academy Award categories.

The following nominees are proposed by myself, on the basis of what I have observed in general discussion of the films in this forum, and my own opinion. I have seen all of these films except for Snow White And The Huntsman and Django Unchained. If broad opinion is expressed that a deserving nominee has been overlooked, and that one of the current nominees is less deserving, changes can be made.

BEST PICTURE NOMINEES Chronicle, The Hunger Games, The Avengers, Prometheus, Brave, The Amazing Spider Man, The Dark Knight Rises, Looper, Skyfall, The Hobbit, Django Unchained, Beasts Of The Southern Wild

BEST DIRECTOR NOMINEES Joss Whedon (The Avengers); Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight Rises), Rian Johnson (Looper), Sam Mendes (Skyfall), Quentin Tarantino (Django Unchained)

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY Looper, Chronicle, Django Unchained, Skyfall, Prometheus

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY (Avengers is counted as 'adapted' because it uses pre-existing characters) The Hobbit, The Dark Knight Rises, The Hunger Games, Beasts Of The Southern Wild, The Avengers

BEST ACTOR Martin Freeman (The Hobbit), Daniel Craig (Skyfall), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Looper), Jamie Foxx (Django Unchained), Dane deHaan (Chronicle)

BEST ACTRESS Jennifer Lawrence (The Hunger Games), Noomi Rapace (Prometheus), Quvenzane Wallis (Beasts Of The Southern Wild), Kristen Stewart (Snow White And The Huntsman), Lily Collins (Mirror Mirror)

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR Andy Serkis (The Hobbit), Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained), Michael Fassbender (Prometheus), Javier Bardem (Skyfall), Mark Ruffalo (The Avengers)

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS Judi Dench (Skyfall), Charlize Theron (Prometheus), Anne Hathaway (The Dark Knight Rises), Emma Stone (The Amazing Spider Man), Julia Roberts (Mirror Mirror)

CINEMATOGRAPHY The Hobbit, Prometheus, Skyfall, Django Unchained, Beasts Of The Southern Wild

COSTUME DESIGN The Hobbit, The Dark Knight Rises, The Avengers, The Hunger Games, Mirror Mirror

VISUAL EFFECTS The Hobbit, Prometheus, The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, The Amazing Spider Man

(This isn't supposed to be an attack on the Oscars; it's just supposed to be a fun way of recognizing what a goldmine of movies we had this year.) Give your choices for the Oscar in the comments!

EDITED TO ADD:

When the actual academy awards include fantasy, zombies, and video game characters in the "animated" category, replicating their choices here seemed redundant. It's the one category where "geek" movies were well-represented. But I can add them.

Well if its supposed to be inclusive of geek culture, you can include Anime. 2012 seemed to be a good year for EVA and Miyazaki fans.

Or choose the more obscure or underrated animated films for this category. Some others are a bit upset Gaurdians got shanghaied for Frankenweenie.

Not to be that guy, but this seems more like "Mainstream big blockbusters" and not "Geek movies." tongue

It's comic books, science fiction, fantasy, and Tarantino - how is that non-geek? It's not my fault geekiness has become popular, though it is a very enjoyable development and it means we get more cool stuff.
