Let's Make A New Genre

We've done Shojo for girls, and Shonen for boys, but now we've run out of genders...

We can go from genre to genre for a while, but looking to the future, we're eventually going to run out...

...unless we make up a new one.

While I don't doubt that we can do it, I also think it will take more than one try to get right. So without further stalling, let's give it a try. We'll probably need:

Target Gender: Usually Male or Female, but it might be worth talking about gender roles and sexual orientation if the characters are going to be viewed as potential role models. To my knowledge there has never been a genre specifically targetting tomboys, ukes, or celibate intellectuals.

Target Age Group: Children's book, YA, Adult Fiction are the usual categories, but there's something to be said for education level. College slacker is a nice broad category full of magical ponies, but again if the characters are going to viewed as role models anyway, there's something to be said about giving kids what we think they should be able to handle instead of dumbing it down.

Basic Setting: A western is a western, even if it's Recycled In SPAAAAAACE!!! Certain Rule of Cool elements can be considered part of the genre as long as we don't go overboard. Certain character types will be reoccuring and there will probably be some tropes considered standard to any genre. However, this is our chance to pick them.

Names and working titles can be given, but shouldn't be considered set in stone for a while.

Making sub-genres of the established genres is good practice, but let's try not to sub-divide any of the potential new genres before they've lived up to their potential.
