Was wondering when this was coming out.

I realized something about King Somber when I was telling my parents about the new series info. I noticed that, if he lives up to his name, King Somber could have been created to intentionally be an opposite villain to Discord, who is chaotic and goofy and loves to have fun (at the expense of others), to make a contrast between the season 2 and season 3 opening stories. And was it really mentioned that Discord might return? If he did, he probably wouldn't get along with a somber, gloomy villain and probably would get in a fight with King Somber.

Somber's method of controlling the populace's emotions and memories smacks heavily of the Sons Of the Patriots System

For some reason I'd kinda like to see Somber get built up as the bad guy only for it to turn out that he's actually trying to be a good guy.

Like suppressing the populace's emotions to prevent them being eaten/frozen by Windigos?

Seems less like he is suppressing their emotions and more like he is inducing depression.

Now is he actively suppressing their memories of his reign, or was his reign just that terrible that no one wants to remember it?

Somber's not gonna be a one-hit wonder, is he?

This show needs a recurring villain.

@Mio: Maybe it's also to prevent a feeding infestation of Changelings.

Do we actually know that Somber is actively suppressing them? Yeah we got that flash of his eyes, but I took that to be repressed memories, not necessarily anything supernatural.

Okay I just rewatched it and I think I changed my mind on that. Nevermind.

My personal is that Cadence is legally the rightful heir to the Crystal Kingdom, and Somber is an ursurper.

How would that work with Somber and the Crystal Empire being a thousand years old and Cadance being relatively young? It's hard to usurp someone before they're born.

I imagine any recurring villain is going to be more of the "bumbling" type for this kind of show.

That's a rather drastic measure for changeling defense.

Somber banished Cadence's ancestors all those years ago. I bet he'll say something about how "Cadence has her great... grandmother's eyes and spirit" at some point with a creepface.

@Mio: Between the Windigos and the Changelings, SOPS is a valid-if-extreme emotional defense.

Of course, we don't know that he's directly responsible for the whole thing either. For all we know, he might be a legitimately good ruler who got screwed over by some other force. Granted, he probably is the bad guy, but it's interesting to speculate.

Well considering the DVD cover for this episode features four of the Mane Six with Crystal Pony eyes I wonder if they are going to fall under Somber's depression spell. Whatever it is it certainly seems like more then just "ZAP your sad now".

The day after Wreck-It Ralph? That will be a good weekend for sure!

My minor predictions:

• Shiny getting mad and/or attacking Somber for hitting on his wife
• more parody material for Metal Gear Solid jokes, especially the Microwave Hall Scene and more Cardboard Box jokes
• Crystal Ponies crying after SOPS is stopped
• AJ killsteals the villain by kicking his throne
• Crystal Six counterparts to the Mane Six will be found
• A Kyubey joke to be somewhere because all the depression and despair

If we're going to add predictions, I say that the princesses are gonna prove their worth.

I would laugh my head off if they made a Madoka Magica reference. Either via Kyubey or MORNING RESCUE.
