A Hypocrite is often understood to be someone who doesn't believe what they preach. This may be to deceive others or themselves (that is to say, they believe they believe something, but they don't actually believe it).

Often, people who don't follow their own advice are lumped with them; the parent who tells a child not to smoke while smoking themselves, for example. It is implied that they are doing it out of a deliberate attempt to deceive. Or something like that. I don't really get it. I don't really understand why it's wrong for a drunk to advise people against drinking. Because, as far as I know, they're not being deceptive, they're just behaving against their own better judgment.

I'd like to discuss this here because the matter confuses me greatly. Anyone care to help me gain some common sense? I'm severely lacking in that department.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
