All Purpose Sonic Fanfiction thread

Are there any good Sonic Underground fics out there? They're so hard to find!

@Zelenal: I think the real problem is that I'm too easily influenced. I keep finding myself listening to more experienced writers on the General Forums at FF.net, and every single time I ask there about my work, they say, 'You're focusing on too many characters', or 'your writing style is clunky and unfocused', or 'it's not tight enough'. Things like that. Couple that with my angst over not getting enough views and I wind up as a wishy-washy mess with constantly changing opinions on my own work. And every time I say "I'm going to do what I want and I'm not going to listen to them any more!", I wind up going straight back to them the next time I lose confidence in my work. This time, it was a review lambasting my story and saying it didn't hook him in that set me off.

It's like... sometimes I believe something one day and then I believe the opposite the next. I just don't always know how to stick to something. And I'm not sure how to fix that.

Here's my advice.

The story is about having a massive ensemble of characters. If you don't do that, then you failed at providing what the story was about to begin with.

So keep your focus on showing off that ensemble, and if someone complains that it's got too many characters, well then the story was never going to appeal to them.

You've got a point. But I think what I really need to do is stay away from the FF.net Forums. They mean well, but... like I said, I'm just too wishy-washy. Too easily influenced, at least when it comes to my writing. One or two posts from them can lead me to do something I'll regret so much as an hour later. I think compared to most of them, my style of writing and what I like in a story is just completely different from them. And that's why they keep on trying to give me so much 'advice'. And so, I just need to stay away. Because otherwise, I'm going to go fucking schizophrenic.

To add on to Nuhmbuh's advice, never go back to FF.net's forums again. At least not to the section where those guys are giving you horrible advice. They don't know how to get you more views any more than I do or any other random person on the Internet.

Your latest Author's Note said something about splitting your single story into multiple stories. Absolutely do not do that. By doing that, you'll make your story needlessly complicated to follow and the whole thing will just go down in flames. This isn't even just me speaking hypothetically here because the comic book industry has done similar things time and time again and it often doesn't end well. Your story is about a group of resistance fighters fighting against Eggman, right? Then it doesn't matter how many characters there are, you need to keep it as one story. Only split off the story if one character (or a group of characters) is going off to do something largely inconsequential or if you want to go into detail about some event without bogging down the main story (as an example, "The Light's Willpower" gives a detailed account of Future Trunks' past which had been given in summary in the main story).

To put everything simply, completely ignore anything that anyone else says and only do what you truly want to do. This even applies to the advice I've given. If you absolutely, positively, honest to God, no doubt about it want to do it then, and only then, should you do it.

Normally, I wouldn't give advice like this but, in your case, I'm making an exception.

Thank, Zelenal. I really needed that. I went back to FF.net and set things back to where they were before I started this whole mess. I put up a new author's note and explained everything upfront. Hopefully, they understand.

Look. I have Asperger's Syndrome. And in this case, that means that sometimes, it doesn't take much to convince me to do something headfirst, only to realize a few hours later that I probably shouldn't have done it. It doesn't happen nearly as much nowadays as it used to, and I've worked a lot on it, but obviously, it's still there to some extent. And so, I can't go back to the FF Forums. EVER. Because when it comes to this sort of thing, I just get influenced far too easily.

Those guys mean well. They really do. And it's not really their fault. But they just didn't know me. If you give me advice, I'll be either 'Fuck you,' or 'Fuck yeah!' There's not always a lot of middle-ground. And that was the problem.

Anyhoo, after getting myself back on track after going crazy yesterday, I've kept on working on my fic while also reading and reviewing other people's fics. And I found this.

One of the first Sonic fanfics I ever read was one where during the final fight in SA 2, Sonic and Shadow saved the world, but died and reincarnated... as Chao. It was a mix of funny and sad because the rest of the cast had no idea XD;

That is... bizarre. Original, but bizarre.

Anyway, I was looking up Sonic stories on the TV Tropes Recommendations Page when I noticed something that caught my eye. It was a fic that took Chris and reimagined him as Eggman's son, sent as a spy to infiltrate Sonic and his friends' ranks. I haven't read the fic myself, but it was still an interesting take. Probably better than he was used in Sonic X. Then I started about how I was going to use Chris in Blue Horizon. And that was when the wheels started turning.

So as we all know, in Sonic X, Chris was an audience stand in a human boy from Earth who existed to both help Sonic and co. adjust to life on Earth while failing to help the audience give a darn about him. He was a character that barely anyone cared about outside of feelings of hate and loathing, and since Earth is never going to show up or even be mentioned in this series, there's not much need for Chris, or at least as he was originally conceived. Initially, I was just going to have his grandfather/uncle/whoever that crazy old coot was be a scientist for Gun and show up around the Adventure era, with Chris tagging along as a supporting character who would only show up once in a blue moon. But I've got something different in mind for him.

Picture this. During a mission, Sonic and some of the other Freedom Fighters come across a scared and confused human boy washed up on a beach. Apparently, he was on a boat-trip with his parents before the entire boat crashed into the sea, and he was the only survivor. Not knowing what else to do with him, they take him back to Knothole. Once he's well, they intend on getting him off of South Westside Island as soon as possible and back to the Federation, with the hopes that one of his relatives can take him in.

As it turns out, this is one giant con. This version of Chris is a robot created by Doctor Eggman to infiltrate the Freedom Fighter's ranks and spy on them from within. Washing up on the beach, losing his entire family in a boat crash? All lies and fabrications. Not that Chris knows this. Eggman had to be sure Chris was convincing, so he made him a sleeper agent and gave him memories of a false-life, with the original programming set to activate when Eggman gives the order.

However, there's one little problem. Chris' 'sleeper' personality has complete free will. He wouldn't be convincing enough if he didn't. And rather than this personality being wiped out, it instead has formed a strong identity and will of its' own, partly on account of interacting with Sonic and the gang. The result is that both personalities merge, but with the 'sleeper' self being largely dominant. Now with both sets of memories intact, Chris decides to stay with the Freedom Fighters and help fight Doctor Eggman, all while trying to discover himself as a person and make a life for himself.

On top of that, Eggman ends up building Omelette (that Mania OC that's been making the rounds,) as Chris' replacement, and so now, Chris finds himself trying to convince Omelette (also a robot,) to make the same decision. Only Omelette doesn't have full free will, so that's going to be a mite harder than it looks...

Are there any Sonic characters you guys find hard to write?

I recently went on a binge of Maria-themed fics. There aren't nearly enough for my liking. Of course, the obvious reaction is "Then I'll write some" but that's easier said than done. I can't get Maria's 'voice' right. 'Doesn't help that I've never played Adventure 2 or Shadow the Hedgehog. This is when I envy people who draw. It's so much easier to convey simple ideas through art than through writing.

Sounds like a mix of Sonic Battle and Breezie's arc from AOStH XD

Maria does sound hard to write. I think some of the spinoff and cartoon characters are fairly hard too, like Sonic's siblings from Underground and Lumina and Void from Sonic Shuffle.

I found Marine to be pretty tricky to write for since I only go by the games (not even sure if she's appeared in the comics) and I've only played Sonic Rush Adventure once and that was many years ago. I had to use the wiki's personality summary.

Probally. I'd be lying if there weren't any similarities between the two. That said, Chris and Emerl/Gemerl are going to have different personalities, and their characters will evolve in different ways. To me, the most important part of a character more than their backstory or anything else is their personality. Who they are now. Hell, to use an example, we barely learn anything about Hamlet's backstory other than that he's a prince and his father was killed, and he's still considered one of the great literary characters in fiction. So long as Chris' and Emerl/Gemerl's personalities are strong enough and different enough, it shouldn't be a problem.

Anyway, Trap and Field, Part 1 (Chapter 29) is up, and it's got a doozy at the end. We also get a brief look at Eggman's past. Ao SH fans are gonna have a field day.

Is that Sonic's design back when he was a rabbit?

Yeeup. He's going to be a separate character here, with his own personality (think Bugs Bunny), powerset (shapeshifter), and backstory. Which is also gonna be kind of... meta.

Basically, Sonic and Sally venture into the Special Zone to find her father, which is also home to various sub-divisions such as The Void or The Warp of Confusion. It's in the Void that they meet Feels. (His 'fanon' name.) It turns out that there's a sort of general tapestry to the universe, but while some things are set in stone, others aren't. Originally, the Powers That Be decided that instead of Sonic the Hedgehog, there'd be Feels the Rabbit, but as time went on, it just wasn't to be, and Sonic was born into existence instead. But rather than disappearing altogether, Feels was sent to the Void, existing as a remnant of what could have been. However, rather than feeling any resentment towards Sonic, (well, maybe a little...) Feels is a rather easygoing sort, and agrees to help his replacement find the King.

Which they do. (Sort of. Spoilers!) However, they have a run in with Dr.Warpnik on the way out, and as Sonic, Sally, and the King(?) near the exit, the good doctor blasts an experimental laser cannon straight at it. When the smoke clears, it's revealed that Sonic, Sally, and the King managed to make it back to the 'real' world, but with an unexpected guest: Feels.

Turns out that Warpnik using that weapon on the exit out of the Special Zone with Feels so close caused a reaction. Normally, Feels would cease to exist outside of the zone, having never fully existed in the first place, but thanks to that reaction, he now has form and substance. Mind you, he's more of a sort of shape-changing ooze that happens to take the shape of a rabbit rather than flesh and blood, but still, for the first time ever, he's completely real. Which is something Feels is going to have to come to grips with.

Don't look at me. It's the fandom who named him, which probably says it all right there. That said, seeing as Feels is a Bugs expy, you can bet he's gonna milk it for all its' worth. "Hey, don't blame me if I wanna cop a feel! It's all in the name!"

I've never seen fanart of the rabbit version of Sonic. Tbqh, I'd like to see more fics or art on proto!Sonic with his girlfriend Madonna and his band.

Oh, proto!Sonic is in it too. Sort of. Mr.Needlemouse is going to be Eggman's first attempt at cloning Sonic, but instead of getting a perfect replica, he gets Mr.Needlemouse. Hilarity Ensues. I was also thinking of adding in Pauline and some other Prototype stuff, (I've already got the rabbit,) but I'm not sure what to do with them. Maybe have them be supporting characters that Sonic runs into once a blue moon?
