For me, I'm a fan of A Us where characters act more rationally. But when you make your characters more intelligent than in canon, you do have to be careful to make them too overpowered. I would say that Seasons of Change (Harry writes letters to Dudley during his first Christmas at Hogwarts) is one of the few that pulls off "smarter trio" in a believable way.
The cold never bothered me anywayThat doesn't sound bad, actually.
And only now do I see that I actually posted some of my ramblings here five years ago about a plot bunny that still hasn't left my head, albeit it's quite a bit different now. More tame.
So, while I was reading the Harry Potter thread here, I came upon this post by Crimson Zypher.
While I don't agree with the gleeful edgelord spirit of the post by the dearly departed (not dead, just forum-banned, and I think I'll miss him as I rarely agreed with his views, finding them too cynical and extreme for my tastes but I do think he did have interesting and worthwhile things to say every now and then), I have to agree that the First Wizarding War is one I want to see too: and weirdly enough, for the same reasons but not the same way, if that makes sense.
Like, Crimson is saying "yeah, that was an awesome time, when the Aurors were 'brutal as fuck', just killing whoever they wanted and got shit done". But for me, the Aurors being "brutal as fuck" isn't awesome. It's disturbing and mortifying. The First Wizarding War was also a time where the Aurors were allowed to use the Unforgivable Curses, where killing people became one of their rules, a time where suspects were tossed over to the Dementors without trial. But that's also what makes it an interesting time, a bleak, terrifying, and paranoid era where one found their country, their family and friends constantly beset by monsters they can never be sure aren't around until it's too late, an era where to secure the safety of those around them against monsters, one must take up a monster's tools.
"Well, times like that bring out the best in some people and the worst in others. Crouch's principles might've been good in the beginning-I wouldn't know. He rose quickly through the Ministry, and he started ordering very harsh measures against Voldemort's supporters. The Aurors were given new powers-powers to kill rather than capture, for instance. And I wasn't the only one who was handed straight to the dementors without trial. Crouch fought violence with violence, and authorized the use of the Unforgivable Curses against suspects. I would say he became as ruthless and cruel as many on the Dark Side."
So, yeah, you could say it's the same edgelord spirit but in different directions. I'm more interested in the atmosphere of fear and terror, the "do not gaze into the Abyss" spirit of the first Wizarding War.
...So, I'm trying to plan out a short story about the First Wizarding War, trying to capture a snapshot of that era, a straight-up horror story. It's going to be a little difficult...mostly because I haven't read the books since I finished the seventh book when it came out. So, before I start writing, I have to take some time playing catch-up to get the general picture and details down.

I'll admit that I don't really involve myself in the fandom much nowadays due to Rowling's political beliefs but someone linked Lavendar/Ron oneshot in the literature section awhile ago. I'll admit to being biased since I never bought into Ron/Hermione (I've always been a Harry/Hermione and Hermione/Neville fan as far as Hermione ships go and I've never shipped Ron with anyone.) and this is admittedly a bit of a fix-it fic with some character bashing (Though it's nothing that contradicts canon.) but I love the author's characterization and writing style, even if their portrayal of Lavendar doesn't exactly fit in with canon.
I'll confess that I'm mostly posting this after wondering into the fanfic section of the forums by accident but...does anyone have any decent Lavendar/Ron or Harry/Hermione fics they could recommend?

1 of my personal favorites: harry potter and the attack of the harry potter
Check out my forum game: Rate the above YMMV.Amazing. Most of those words were spelled correctly.
Nach jeder Ebbe kommt die Flut. Why wouldn't they be? Wait, did you think "the harry potter" was meant to be "the hairy potter"? It isn't. "the harry potter" turns out to be his reflection in the mirror.
Check out my forum game: Rate the above YMMV.If anyone is interested, On the Way to Greatness just got a new chapter after about 7(?) years of hiatus.
I'm sorry for not wording that properly. I meant, It's amazing that most of the words in that story are spelled correctly.
Nach jeder Ebbe kommt die Flut.I really love (honey) there is no right way
It's such a great Groundhog Day-style story and my favorite Harry x Cedric fic too.

I'm normally not a fan of Harry Potter due to the sheer incompetence and uselessness of the Muggles but I have found a few fics where Muggles and the Magic side team up for some major asskicking.
Harry Potter and the Super Bowl Breach is one of my personal favorites. It's a Doorstopper at a little over 1,000,000 words but it explores how the Statute of Secrecy could collapse and its ramifications for both sides. And some truly awesome battle sequences.
mugglesftw has Harry Potter and The Iron Lady and its sequel, Nymphadora Tonks: The Last Auror. Granted, they're AU fics but the team up of Magic and Muggle against Voldemort's forces is quite a sight to behold.
