Would be nice to see what he's compared to. Otherwise I've seen several styles where that's the norm, so it doesn't tell me much of anything.

It's better, but the whole hugging bit kind of detracts from the loser part.
Definitely JAFAAC. I'm not really seeing the loser element in the suggested replacement, but a caption might help it a bit.
I mostly got the 'loser' bit from the hug actually- The doe-eyed guy is dominating the picture, seems better groomed than the beady-eyed kid, has a much more confident expression and just seems more in control in comparison. A good caption would probably help though. I'll see if I can find anything better.
EDIT: Okay, more from the series. Still going for the comparisons, since without it one might think it's just the show's art style. The first one is the clearest. In the second, I just find the pink tie extremely tacky...
As for the previous suggestion, the hug shows him more as submissive or shy than a loser, which is different.
