A large portion of commentaries are made by film critics and historians, especially on older movies when most of the people involved are dead.

To me, "actors from the movie doing commentary in character" is part of the official commentary trope.

Or do we really think we need four tropes:

  • I. Directors, producers, film historians.
  • II. Actors, whether in character or not.
  • III. Rifftrax, etc.
  • IV. By fans, for fans, for free.

So we need a crowner to resolve this. I'm not sure how to organize it, though. The options seem to be to merge into Dvd Commentary, split into several kinds of alternate commentaries or several different ways we could define the difference between a regular and alternate commentary. Do we want to do one crowner for everything or do one to see if there are one, two or more commentary tropes and another to see what they are if it's more than one?

I'm not totally convinced that this is "Problem that needs action" and not just "OP misunderstands the trope".

Rhymes with "Protracted."

In that case, it needs a better description. The examples for Alternate Dvd Commentary are all over the place. It seems to be a catch-all for anything that isn't made by the filmmakers with real-world info and released on the DVD. The description would seem to exclude creator-made examples, but there's a whole section of them.

This is trivia; I don't think it needs to be overly precise. I'd adjust the description to match the usage and go on to something more important, myself.

Speaking words of fandom: let it squee, let it squee.
