Realism of Sex as Exercise.

The only way this thread could be any creepier is if it involved underage girls.

I want to know what any of this has to do with writing.

I want to know what any of this has to do with writing.

Probably nothing, specifically. It just seems like a silly stupid question. "Lol do you think sex would be good for exercise?" It seems harmless to me, but also pointless.

If I personally were to use such an idea, it'd probably be for some ridiculous sitcom-esque piece as comedy. Like, a new couple all into each other use this as an excuse to ignore everything and hide in their apartment for a week while the rest of the cast just shake their heads and ignore them. It seems like it would have little utility as far as actual plot goes, though.

Bah! Naysayers. Thank god the internet didn't exist when Farmer, Zelazny, and Vonnegut were starting their careers. They would have been told by all posters that their ideas were frivolous, immature, farfetched, etc., and if they listened to the negative feedback, speculative fiction would be just a little bit more homogeneous today. I'm glad to discuss a novel story concept, myself.

Although "Viking rape cardio" was just a little bit out there, even for me...

Insinuating that any of us are as good as those authors is highly disingenuous, as is equivocating this particular idea with their given plot concepts.

I wouldn't criticize this idea as bad because it's not realistic at all, but because it's just plain dumb, and has no utility outside bad sitcoms or bad pornography.

Yeah god forbid those great authors (WHICH WE ARE TOTALLY COMPARABLE TO M I RITE) should have to deal with *shudder* actual criticism.

And rape cardio is way, way beyond "a little bit out there." Why does everything have to involve rape around here?

...it doesn't. I don't know where you're getting that impression. Really.

If the TC wanted to make this a viable thread, he could have made an opening post that laid out how he plans to use it in his story or something. Right now this seems more like a creepy fetish thread. And that's ignoring the Viking rape cardio.

Not implying that anybody is as good as anybody. Just sharing my opinion that instantly dismissing any idea that isn't "normal" or "appropriate" doesn't help anyone creatively.

Then why bring up the names of classic well-known authors if you weren't making that comparison?

I am fairly sure it was just a really badly attempted joke.

It was something of an attempted joke. If it was a badly attempted joke, my bad.

Personally thought the thread was quite viable, for an evening there; it did get out of hand with the rape stuff, which I've lampshaded in my every reply since then.

That was actually a reply about the whole "this has turned into a fetish thread!" where it really seems more like someone who had an out there idea, and made a slightly off joke.

OK it was a joke.

What I'm getting at is that there's really nothing to go off of here as far as how the TC plans to incorporate this element in his story. Right now, it's more like "hey guys wouldn't sex as exercise be awesome?!"

—shrugs— that's what most ideas, aren't they? Wouldn't X be cool? Most other ideas and the like don't get any discussion.

Sure, but how does he plan to incorporate it into the story?

Who knows, who cares? That's not the point of the thread. S/he was asking the realism of something, which is something that gets asked a lot here, although it's usually in the RQ thread, since it's a quick question to ask.

[up][up][up][up] Yes, at this stage the TC has presented us with a conceit, not an idea. Maybe that's as far as he's gotten so far. Fine. I'm willing to discuss a conceit.

A fully fleshed out setting where the TC was thinking of using it with an explanation of how it came to be would have been nice, and would have drawn more and more informative responses, but the lack of that doesn't make the thread irrelevant to writing, imo.

Another TL:DR post.
