Good Old Games relaunches as... GOG.com

Site down since a hour ago, I don't know if really for maintenance or because of heavy number of accesses. As you see, they have officially rebranded it with the name it was most known for, also to mark the no more "total" association with older games. New releases for today are Trine and The Whispered World, upcoming releases are Darwinia, Machinarium and SpaceChem, and you can even preorder The Legend of Grimrock from there. Some will cost a little more than the $9.99 maximum GOG was used to. There should some requested features (don't ask me which) and a new downloader.

This is good, and I also hope they will showcase more fine freewares, since recently they added Treasure Adventure Game among their free downloads. On the other hand, I hope any deserved success won't drive GOG too much away from the path it was born on.

It was to be expected with unusually recent releases like Dark Star One and especially The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings (the latter even having a pre-order option).

While I do hope that it doesn't take away from their original focus, I do hope they keep their pricing competitive (I have to admit, I haven't bought as many games as I'd like from there simply because of competition from Steam and GamersGate), and also possibly branch out into multi-platform releases, like all those indie bundles you see nowadays. (That, and replace some of the IBM PC/DOS versions of their titles with superior Commodore Amiga versions, but the licensing involved for Kickstart ROMs would complicate that too much.)

No surprise, really, they announced this quite a while ago and made clear that The Witcher 2 won't be the only modern game they offer.

I too hope that they won't neglect older games too much now.

The Witcher games are from CD Projekt, the same people who set GOG up, so it was natural to have them there as "exceptions".

Still one of the only three sites I buy digital copies of games from.

Speaking of GOG.com, I have noticed that the page for Steam is being used as an idex for the games it sells. I was thinking of doing something similar with GOG.com, but first I'd like to know what is the general opinion about it.

[up]I think that's a really good idea.

Somehow you know that the time is right.
