I like the Little Mermaid one, but I think swap the original ending to the left. And it should have a cute caption, for the benefit of those abjectly unfamiliar with either version of the story. Something like:
"Pictured left: heartbroken mermaid dissolving into foam. Right: It was a teenage wedding, and the old folks wished 'em well."
All that seems like intentional opacity.
The Little Mermaid is "Disneyfied" but apparently doesn't make a good image.
Becky: Who are you? The Mysterious Stranger: An angel. Huck: What's your name? The Mysterious Stranger: Satan.I don't think anything makes a good image. Lets just leave the trope imageless. Nearly half the tropes are imageless, and this trope doesn't look in need of an image.
We're talking about cartoons, and you're saying it doesn't need an image? We just need to find the right one(s).
You haven't given a good reason not to use it. An that the trope has too many aspects to cover is not a reason. Pictures are to illustrate a trope, not show the comprehensive breadth (unless a trope is actually about that, but this is not one of those).
I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid. The image does not illustrate the trope unless you know what it's a picture of. Even then it's sort of a stretch.
Becky: Who are you? The Mysterious Stranger: An angel. Huck: What's your name? The Mysterious Stranger: Satan.Well of course not everyone is going to know what work a picture is. That's what captions, potholes, and even picture text is for.
I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid. That exact argument could be used to support a picture of Haruhi.
Knowing what work something is from is not the problem at all. Even if "this is the original story" and "this is the Disney version" were perfectly clear (and it's not), "Disneyfication means the softening of the grim parts of fairy tales in a reproduction to make it suitable for children" is a lot for a caption to carry. Even if the message is none of that besides "here is an example of Disneyfication" that is totally opaque. You'd have to know that is what the image is saying to get that message.
If there is a good image for this, great, all for it. But that is the wrong ballpark.

What? Pictures are about illustrating the trope, not knowing what the work is. If a Haruhi pic showed a trope, that is what matters.

Her throwing herself into the sea in one frame, and then ending up married in the other, doesn't show the trope enough?

"...doesn't show the trope enough?" Nope.
^ Dig it. Have originals? Would arrange slightly differently. (But fine as-is.)

That just doesn't make sense. At least tell us why you don't think it's enough.
I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid. That's pretty good.
I'm not crazy, I just don't give a darn!I like the Hunchback idea.
The words above are to be read as if they are narrated by Morgan Freeman.I also think it's a good one.
I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.I like the Hunchback pic too.

Becky: Who are you? The Mysterious Stranger: An angel. Huck: What's your name? The Mysterious Stranger: Satan.I think that's a winner.
The words above are to be read as if they are narrated by Morgan Freeman. My picture endorses that picture.
That Hunchback pic is awesome.
Reaction Image RepositoryI like that one a little better than the other one. One or two more votes and we can run with it.
That's saying we should tell instead of show.
