Imagine you feel duty towards a particular group of people, yet you see yourself incapable of fulfilling said duty.

In the end, is the feeling even worth it? On one side, that there is duty towards a particular group of people might give the impression of elitistic discrimination, no matter how well justified it is in the end, while on the other it can be said to just be plain worthless as you are incapable of fulfilling said duty.

Imagine also that nobody cares about said duty, even the people you feel you owe something to.

Would focusing your energy in trying to fulfill said moral instincts be the way to go, or should you just forget about it?

If I feel compelled to do something that's going to do nothing but piss people off, and nobody's going to care about why I'm doing it, I generally attempt to avoid it.

If I understood the OP correctly, this is sort of how I feel about patriotism at this point...

"Shit, our candidate is a psychopath. Better replace him with Newt Gingrich."
