Um, I was making fun of people who think that way. I didn't mean to offend you, I was merely pointing out the holes in the bootstraps argument by pointing out that there are reasons that the poor are involuntarily so.

It's a very good idea to keep the sarcasm to a minimum, since it is almost inherently dismissive and insulting. State your facts and reasoning and rebut their points for best effect.

I did and Mort ignored it in favor of le bootstraps. So I decided to approach the issue from another angle to highlight how offensive the argument is.

Indeed, it's not always within our control.

I went to college, got a B.A. and I work as a cashier. However, I'm working under a manager who is impressed with my work, and knows I'm looking to move up.

A college degree leading into a starter's job isn't a bad thing, and the lessons learned in college can help do such jobs even better.

Still, getting there is the problem, and with money tight, it gets harder. I'm one of the lucky ones.
