Also, it implies that D&D ever went away. People have been playing D&D continuously to this day.

Not D&D in general. Play By Post has been on the decline since the internet went mainstream.
Why wait for the letter detailing the next set of actions to come back when you could just post on a facebook group set up for the game or do play-by-email.
