Since the image is the entirety of The Far Side strip, it's not a proper image (since it can't fall under Fair Use, as we are showing the entire work without permission). And Newspaper comics don't use Creative Commons as liscences.

Then it's virtually impossible to use any The Far Side strips for anything because 99% of them are in single-panel format to begin with.

Well the actual thing about fair use isn't so much about "the whole work" as it is "more of the work than necessary". With a single-panel comic it's actually just impossible to use less than the whole thing, so there's no way we're getting in trouble for it.

If we're worried, though, we could scale down the size. Thumbnails are allowed.*

[up] Actually a quick glance at the cases you linked, you'd see the Amazon one featured a case where amazon did not HOST or MAKE the thumbnails, but merely linked to them (other site had stolen the contents). Amazon (and Google, who was also getting sued) never held the images inside their databanks. The issue was about local caching of images from infringing websites, which the court said there was not enough evidence to find google or amazon responsible. source

The first case you cited did not include a full work but only 7 images from a 420 page book, which were deemed to fall under fair use. A far cry from using the entirety of a comic strip.

More on topic, it's also just an image of the Trope Namer, not an illustration of the trope.

Motion to pull

Per Ghilz' last point, the pic doesn't actually demonstrate the trope.

Does anyone have any clue how to handle this?

1st panel: Someone playing video games, someone telling him to put up the dishes.

2nd panel: Said gameplayer emptying the dishwasher.

3rd panel: Gameplayer back at couch, second person claiming he's done nothing.

[up][up] Find something that illustrates the trope. Or put nothing rather than an image of the trope namer of dubious legality.

[up]Do you have that in picture form?

Aside from its other flaws, which are numerous: that image communicates nothing.

I've seen 20LogRoot10's type of picture before, but the problem is their memetic content is up to 9000.

I find this a Keep Until Better Image Suggested. If you look at the current image, you may feel the Tethercat Principle, because people feeling that is precisely where the trope comes from.

Considering that the Tethercat Principle got its name because it supposedly applied to this comic, I don't see a problem.

Also, this being a YMMV trope, I don't see a problem with it being YMMV on whether or not it applies to the comic.

Also consider that the TRS thread decided not to rename it because of the high inbounds. I'd apply a similar standard to the picture. The page as a whole is performing well. I don't think it is creating any problems. If it ain't broke, don't "fix" it to the point of being utterly boring and generic.

I can see your point, but unlike trope descriptions, you can't really measure how well an image is performing that way.

Frankly, I don't think the "Can this be understood by someone that is too illiterate to read the page?" standard that I see in lots of these threads is a good way of measuring performance.

Yes, your standards are correct for wikis and, really, articles in general. That's how Wikipedia uses their page images.

However, page images in this wiki works differently—we only have one per page due to some reason (bandwidth, for one), and we need to use that to demonstrate the trope, not only to complement the page.

FWIW, as I read in a recentish interview, Gary Larson is definitely not OK with Far Side strips being used on random web pages and the like. Which (unless we got explicit permission) would be neither here nor there vis-a-vis copyright, but you've got "wishes of the creator" there too, if that's important for you.

I think we have to pull the image simply on copyright/fair use grounds; there's not much point arguing about whether it's a good trope image or not.
