And apart from Gandhi (who was not the end all be all of the independence movement) there was Subash Chandra Bose's Indian National Army doing some Enemy Mine to destabilize the empire in India. Also, the Russians would have put military and indirect pressure there so the Indians would not even be available to fight. If this was going to happen, Britain would not have anything better than a cheerleader role.
