Yeah, I'm about to visit my relatives in the Midwest. You kind of need a car for anything other than schmoozing around the house because town is 10 miles of farmland away.

Part of that, of course, is that we've designed societies based around individual motorized mobility, and idolized its use as almost the dictionary definition of "freedom". The inability to drive is a major handicap in such a society.
Thus, people will rationalize all kinds of things in order to keep the ability to drive. Many could not keep their jobs if they couldn't drive. Some would be practically trapped in their homes permanently, given the lack of public transit in some areas.
I count myself remarkably lucky in the modern United States to be able to get to and from work without driving. Even so, if any of my problems or the medications to alleviate them rendered me unsafe to drive, it would be seriously problematic.
A brighter future for a darker age.
