I thought the reason for those attacks was to force Jeremie (I still spell it the Season 1 way) to use Returns to the Past until XANA was strong enough to introduce Aelita to Skippy.

Things I wish they could have wrapped up in the show, in ascending order: Didn't William love a girl from his old school? Maybe go Freudian and give her turquoise hair? Will the gang get post-traumatic stress now, especially Aelita (dad died) and William (failed twice, majorly [not really])? With XANA gone, will Project Carthage come back? Really, who were those agents? And are they really called The Division (the iTunes description of False Lead), because they totally stole mine.... Was that Antea's brain in the Siberian replika base? Really, who just walks by a human brain, makes a joke, and then leaves? The satellite. What? Is the vending machine secretly evil? Like, eviler than XANA? Does Jim never age? Explains the band-aid and the perpetual stubble. And finally... Mister Puck. No, it is not solved. Not until he shows up at the school and puts leeches in Herve's shoes. I will not settle for snails.
