Such is why I support free immigration with Canada and... somewhere down the line... Mexico.

We can't really say we don't have the resources for it, in retrospect. Increased demand = more supply created by the private sector. I'm sure they'd love a larger customer base they wouldn't have to jump through hoops to get to.

Side note: the typo in the title is bothering me...

Edit: It's ironic that I made a typo when complaining about a typo. [lol]

We have the resources to support a lot of people. Conservatives just like to create a lot of fear of the 'other'. When most of our citizens don't travel (And because of the current situation don't make enough money to do so) that's pretty easy to do.

Though I imagine that free immigration with Mexico would mostly just move a good amount of our dollars down there, given that most immigrants send like half their paychecks back home. (Though I'm not an economist, so I don't know if that would help business build up down there or not.) But anyway, I think it'd be easier on everyone if we just made it easier for Mexicans to move here. They're not doing it out of maliciousness, they're doing it because it's the better choice right now. And they're not in it for the birth tourism, either.

The typo's bothering me too.

Well, the theory (as per breadloaf) is that free trade with Mexico would bring a lot of so-called "border factories" back up, as there would no longer be any real reason to have them in Mexico if the workers can come up, too.

Meh, I'm less enthusiastic about free trade these days, as it doesn't seem to really be helping anyone. Though I've yet to get a satisfactory explanation of why "fair trade" is a good alternative. Free movement, however, is something I'm for with someone we're trying to build better relations with.

Anyways, enough being off topic. <.< I'm bad at doing that.

Eh, either way, yeah, I don't have much of a strong opinion on this.

I don't know. I mean it happens in Canada as well, I have even have friends who were "birth tourists", except most of them contributed so much to Canada that getting angry at them "gaming the system" is rather silly. I mean, 100% of the friends I have that were birth tourists gave tens of thousands more in tax dollars than Canadians born in Canada, making their complaints of "they don't contribute", very empty. Heck, if you want to kick people out based on contributions, the people complaining and lived their whole life in Canada would be bumped first :P

The concern is if you're getting crappy citizens. If these kids grow up to be doctors, lawyers, scientists and engineers, I really don't see how you're losing out versus supporting a domestic American who might grow up to be totally useless.
