My question is this: Am I the only one who sees that line of reasoning as complete and utter bullcrap?

If you claim to love someone, and use that emotional attachment to deny them their free will, to the point of killing them, to what degree, if any, are you free to claim (or is anyone free to claim on your behalf) that you ought to be punished less because you were acting out of "love"?

You are not the only one. If you could hurt people "out of love", then a lot of people would get away with crimes that they should not.

Besides, that is not true love, that is intense jealousy, lust and selfishness. A real lover would let his partner make his own decisions about whom he gives his love to.

Banned entirely for telling FE that he was being rude and not contributing to the discussion. I shall watch down from the goon heavens.

Yes, it was unhealthy and obsessive, but there were justifications for that in story (not that that excuses the murderer's actions). I'm pretty sure the author wasn't TRYING to write it healthily, but the character who said the line in the title of this thread had no context for how a healthy relationship is SUPPOSED to be. It was an IC statement, even though objectively there are some major issues with it.

I don't doubt the sincerity of such love, even if I doubt the healthiness.

As far as I can tell, he didn't do it out of love. If you kill someone and also have the intention to do so, it's not love because it's simply logical that you don't want to affect things you love in a negative way. The only cases I can imagine where that happens is when the person doing it is delusional, meaning he actually doesn't realize he's doing something bad to whoever.

What people seem to forget is that love and hate aren't super-opposites that are 100% mutually exclusive... It just doesn't happen, these feelings can easily overlap.
