The West is here to stay, actually.

The article fails in two ways:

1. The West is the most environmentally stable (excluding the Netherlands). When climtae chnage comes around, the developing world (whic is almost always more environmentally fragile) will syffer. Only China is really stable, and the overpopulation will be hell anyways.

2. The West has bth trong civil foundations and has achieved it's wealth, not plans o growing into it. Retaining a slightly lower level of prosperity then before the crash isn't a goal too far away.

Something to keep in mind is that the modern system is the "Western system". Due to the very nature of this modern era, primarily with regard to the high levels of international communication and movement, we've got more global interconnection and exchange than ever before. As far as I'm concerned, the Occident itself is no longer contained by geographic or political boundaries - this is something that hasn't occurred, at least to any significant extent, with any dominant civilisation or collection of civilisations in the past. What this means for the "collapse" of the West, is another matter, but I think I can at least say that those quotation marks are important.
