[up][up] Not necessarily, but laws against abortion are perceived as insane on several levels. Not just because one's protecting insentient fetuses at the expense of sentient human beings, but because there are also doubts about the effectiveness, whether it does more harm than good in practice, etc...

Now I'm not like those mainstream pro-choicers; I'm not going to brand everyone opposed to legal abortion some woman-hating neanderthal; but I do think the question of "if you don't trust the decision to get an abortion, would you trust those who would if they could to carry a child for 9 months without seriously hurting him/her" is one those opposed to any particular abortion should ask.

Pretty much.

Most of the people who would need an abortion are people who can't really look after the baby themselves.

I know the whole "use a condom, blah blah blah" business, but really, not many people actually get abortions.

When it's easy to get abortions, people also get abortions very early term before there's anything but a pack of cells. Ironically, restrictions on abortion typically tends to cause the later-term abortions that the anti-abortion crowd whines about in the first place.

Yeah, exactly.

Why not compromise?

Make the legal limit for abortions something that is less that 20 weeks? That sounds somewhat sane.

The Canadian Tories make our Tories seem like saints, I swear.

You can't actually limit anything legally under our Charter (or so goes my understanding). The Supreme Court already said no on any restriction.

Right.

What are the Tories going to get out of this? Surely it seems that the majority of the Canadian populace aren't this crazy, and they'll vote him out next election, right?

But then again, populaces are fickle and ignorant...

[up][up] Sort of.

The previous legislation was ruled unconstitutional, but Parliament couldn't decide on what should replace it. Leaving Canada with no legal restrictions at all[1].

Most likely any law the Tories are pushing would 'only' bring them in line with the rest of the western world.

Pretty much.

I'm of the opinion they'll lose when the average Canadian realizes they aren't Conservative, and when you elect a Conservative majority, they will do conservative things.

Wow. When we elect Tory majorities they... do centre-right things.

Surely the populace knew they were voting for Conservative, right? What they vote is what they get.

How much of the Commons does Harper own?

It got worse.

Another MP is now openly being anti-abortion. This time he's saying "Planned Parenthood conned the government".

Look, I don't give a shit if Canadian aid money is being used for abortions. They should use all the tools available for maternal health issues. This is pure bullshit that Planned Parenthood has to defend its use of money as not being for abortion.

And yeah it's a dictatorship. A lot of the voters that put the Tories into power did so under an unspoken contract that Harper would keep a lid on his socially conservative policies because they just wanted a majority government. I have to say the voters were idiots for believing that tory M Ps would respect such an unspoken (and unenforceable) arrangement.
