I'd be interested in a topic about how the gamestate is going down.

But yes, when you don't have all the characters, you're being impeded. I should able to play with everyone with hard work, not paying cash.

It's my biggest pet peeve of Marvel VS Capcom 2. You didn't do any work to unlock anything. It's lazy. And so is this. And when I can't choose whoever I want because I can't get online, yes, our ability to enjoy the game is lessoned.

[up] See this post for more information. Also, agreed. It's the same reason why all these constant game updates(MMO's discluded) are annoying.

Character DLC for fighting games is AWFUL. That's all.

And yet some guy I know sees the above as a good thing, for some reason.

Would you care to expand upon that statement? Because that's a very subjective viewpoint you have there, and I'm quite certain several fighting game fans disagree with you on that matter.

[up] It forces customers to buy them if they want to stay competitive online. If they didn't, they would stay at a disadvantage. Especially bad if said DLC is far and above most of the other characters.

I know that I won't play online in games with character DLC. Maybe if said DLC was restricted to offline I would, but that won't happen.

Wait, your statement has a major contradiction here. If you can get online to play competitively, then you can get online to buy(if it's not free) and download those characters.

Anyway, it bothers me that the offline players are screwed over.

I mean, stages, items, I can forgive those. But the actual characters should be able to be unlocked without going online as is.

The issue is not having to go online, the issue is having you pay more than what you've already paid for the game.

We could get to a point where video gaming becomes SO expensive, that ONLY safe games are made.

Not ever going to happen. There'll always be independent markets and smaller developers who at least make a token effort to put gamers first. The only people who stand to lose anything are technology freaks whose demands need massive byzantine companies to fulfill.

So long as they don't make the DLC completely exclusive to the one store and give the option to purchase it online at a later date, I'm okay with it. It's a little annoying, but I can see where it comes from.

On the subject of fighting game character DLC: I think Blaz Blue did it best. Okay, sure, Continuum Shift did have some ridiculous DLC when it was released (Announcer voices at like five bucks each? twenty bucks for all the Pallete Swaps!?) but the fans actually wanted to play as Matoko Nanaya and Valkenhayn R. Hellsing from the story mode. Arc Systems Works basically just said "Sure".

Similarly, Mortal Kombat had Rain and Kenshi added because they where fan favorites, even if they where probably in development before the game was released.

That's the thing with DLC in general. It shouldn't be some extra cash grab where features from the game are held hostage or as some mission/map pack that's not necessary tacked on to maximize profits. DLC should be added to please fans, not piss them off. Adding new content to old games and charging for it isn't new (Expansion packs, people.) but it's new that this stuff is planned from the outset instead of used to address the weaknesses of the game or enhance their strengths. Hence, why preorder DLC is bad.

Now, as I said before I usually don't have a problem with preorder DLC, but now I'm getting problems about the difference between "packed in the game with the disc" and "added by the store" DLC that's irritating me since I'm started to gravitate towards a more local game store rather than Gamestop - which can't give preorder DLC that isn't packed with the game, even if that DLC is universal.

It irritates, because now I'm wondering whether Sonic Generations' DLC, which is available for everyone no matter what outlet you buy at, would be available there, or if I'd have to wait for it to get released later on and pay for it...
