Always fun to see references to Newgrounds even long after that site's decline.

I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!Well, the place still exists at least, and I'm sure Matt'll never forget it since it's somewhere he put the first game.
Apparently Matt has just realized a stat was bugged to not even do anything (which gives me Dragon Age: Origins flashbacks).

Epic Battle Fantasy 5 (tentatively) releases on Steam of the day November 30th, 2018! For $15. Free web version due next year.
Holy crap I am not even done with 3 yet, and I gave up on 4 after my data was deleted.
Jesus, I need to make some time and catch up. I thought this was never coming out.
I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!Is this a bad time to say owning the 4th game on Steam gives you a 20% off coupon for 5 until the end of the year?
-checks Steam account pronto because I bought EPB 4 awhile ago-
I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!Okay, impressions now that I'm... about halfway(?) through the game:
- More tutorializing than the earlier games, but mostly about fairly obvious stuff
- Enemy respawning has been cut down. You need to zone to for them to respawn, and even then only a handful will. I think only like half the chest guards will?
- I think some summons might be missable because of this
- There's too many damn summons. Early game you'll be trying to catch something pretty much every battle, and choosing which to equip is a pain
- They're not really that useful, though
- AP curve seems to be reversed from 4— skills level rapidly early on before slowing down later
- Skill leveling is especially important this time around, since it unlocks alternate attack forms (and I feel like damage grows faster?)
- This makes extra skills hard to use, since by the time you have many you're more likely to be focusing on the regular skills
- Much better about late characters having enough AP and skill levels. They're a bit behind, but not useless for half the game the way Lance was in 4
- Skill leveling is especially important this time around, since it unlocks alternate attack forms (and I feel like damage grows faster?)
- Character balance:
- I think Matt's stronger than usual? Helps make up for having minimal multi-target attacks
- Anna and Lance have stats that correspond to what they do now
- Anna's generally a lot more usable than I remember her being in 4
- Lance hits like a truck, but nearly everything he does has a cooldown attached. Combined with poor elemental coverage and not having much single-target, he's hard to use much
- Natalie is kinda weak now, outside of her light and dark attacks. There's actually a lot of design decisions that feel motivated by how powerful she could become in 4
- Nolegs has low HP but otherwise very high defensive stats. Tanking isn't really possible, though...
- Still useful on offense, though
- Stat up food is now divided by character
- Light is bizarrely common. Only Lance doesn't get native access to it, and it's generally learned pretty early
- Wind is probably the hardest element to exploit now
- Natalie's limit breaks are both healing-based, but she doesn't naturally learn healing skills?
Okay, where the hell do I get the cloud boots? I've killed Snowflake (stat-decreasing ailments are busted), achieved 100% map completion, looted all but the final door of the Grand Gallery (that's not happening), and found three glitched areas. Is it a code thing? Do I need to find another glitch area? Behind a paywall? Or did I just just overlook something?
Did you see the stone blocks with the dots on it? Those corresponds with the pedestals you have to put the flowers on.
...Goddamnit. I knew about them (and got one), but had been hoping it didn't gate anything major. Time to comb all the previous areas and take notes this time, I guess
Game overed for the first time to the final boss. ...I'm not sure I like this game enough to go for a second try. Like, I could probably win if I use 9 lives once the boss charges up, but that is not a fun fight
Assorted thoughts now that I'm basically done:
- Matt's still the least useful character. Not especially strong, no aoe, little ability to status
- Anna can do basically everything really well
- Anna and Lance have a bunch of weapons that switch which damage stat is higher, but none of the extra skills are useful enough for this to be worthwhile
- I hate the new buff mechanics
- The game really emphasizes collecting for the sake of collecting
- It's nice that the map is accurate and that you can mark it, but the fact that stores and warp points aren't marked already is aggravating
- The fast travel system is really not very well set up
- Needs more bosses with gimmicks
So yeah, this is a good game. Charming, very impressive for a solo project, and a bit too bloated for me to quite consider it great
