Great picture of Cleopatra, save that it doesn't show off her nose. The one defining part of her that the trope is supposed to be about is made look smaller by the straight on perspective. Something more like this image of Adrien Brody would show the trope better.

That Cleopatra has a very standard nose going on there. Mr. Brody, on the other hand, has a nose large enough that I could drive my van through his nostrils!

I'm not sure if I understand what this trope is about, but the Gerudo from Zelda have VERY large noses and are definitely attractive: http://zeldakingdom.wordpress.com/zelda-art/ocarina-of-time/nabooru/

[up] Yes, that is what this trope is about. Large attractive noses is the trope. Feel free to list them. I do think a head shot is better for this trope than a full body shot though.

[up][up] You probably could drive a van through those things, and it's obviously a glamour shot. I think it works well.

Eh, it's decent, but everything in her face is exaggerated with confuses the trope a little. Her eyes and lips are also huge which makes it look like her skull is just tiny rather than her nose big. Good example. Not such a good image. It's also fan art which I'm leery of using without permission.

Even though it shows it straight on, you can still tell it's a bit bigger than average. I think the best solution would be to find a better image of Cleopatra herself.

I really think the examples would do better for having a male face. It's almost a foot note that men count for the trope though.

Probably because it's much more common/less of a big deal for a man to have a big nose and still be considered attractive than it is for a woman.

[up] And yet the women outnumber the men in the examples and people don't seem to realise they count for the trope. It's the down side of a gender neutral trope with a gendered name.

[up] ...that's my point, that's why the women outnumber the men. Because a woman having a big nose is more notable all around.

Basically, a woman having a big nose is both more likely to register as notable to begin with and also be considered a more unusual trait in terms of attractiveness. And a woman's nose often only has to be moderate-sized to be considered "large", as Hollywood tends to consider a tiny little nose as "normal".

Whereas a guy's nose usually isn't considered notable unless it's a very large or unusual nose, and usually isn't a big factor in whether they're attractive or not.

(Speaking as a woman "blessed" with a noticeably wide nose, I tend to pay more attention to this sort of thing than usual, I admit.)

And yet it's a frequently described feature on men especially in classic literature as to the reason why they're attractive. I read a lot.

I read a lot too... I just don't like classic literature. tongue

But, you seemed puzzled as to why it's so female-heavy. I didn't say you had to like the explanation.

I like the Adrian Brody pic. Alternatively, there's Uma Thurman. I don't like the Gerudo woman pic at all.

[up] Not the best image of her, but passable. Still prefer Brody.

[up] Once again, all her facial features are very large and her skull is proportionally small. It's too cartoony to show the trope well. It's not about exaggerating all the facial features.

[up] Compared to the average "pretty" nose drawn by that same artist [1], though, Cleopatra's is really long and big in proportion to the other features (drawing style taken into account). But perhaps we can find a better example.

(I can't actually see the Brody picture, I get a "Forbidden" error)

I like the Brody picture. That's one jumbo nose and it seems like it works to his benefits.

(Ah, that Asterix picture brings back memories... I think it's decent, but not as good as the Brody one. Image Links material, sure.)

[up][up] You can't assume that everyone will be familiar with the artist. In that particular image it just looks like he likes drawing people's actual skulls tiny as some sort of caricature.

EDIT: Trimmed and uploaded the Brody pic so people can see it.

I like the Brody pic myself.

And, that woman's nose doesn't look all that big to me; it doesn't seem all that wide or long in terms of sticking out. It's more that her face is long that makes the effect.
