Appeasement gave the Germans additional time to rearm as well as additional resources. Had Chamberlain not appeased Hitler, the war may have started sooner, but it may have been shorter.
However, Chamberlain did not have the gift of hindsight and the general public was in favor of the doctrine of Peace at Any Cost.
Many in Britan and America symphatised with the Nazis back then... at the time it wasnt seen as incredibly evil... Theu even fooled the Red cross about how humane the concentration camps where... for a time.
I will always cherish the chance of a new beggining.Guys, the subject is pacifism and appeasement in general. If I knew how far this would derail I wouldn't have brought it up.
...you're complaining because we're bringing up the greatest failure of appeasement in human history to show a textbook example of it not working?
I am now known as Flyboy.I'm complaining because you aren't mentioning it in relation to pacifism or the topic at hand and have instead gone into a derail about wether Hitler was pure evil or not.
...I personally was done with the derail, since I pointed out I was falling into hindsight.
I don't understand why anyone would want appeasement, really. You're just condoning whatever actions they're doing. If you don't stand up for yourself, nobody else will stand with you...
I am now known as Flyboy.@tropetown: Believe it or not, some people are willing to make sacrifices in order to do the right thing. It's why people donate to charity.
Leave your dignity at the door.Yes. The keyword here is "willing", not "expected to". Nobody is expected to give to charity, which is why it's seen as a nice gesture when they do. Expecting someone to be a martyr is foolish, and I do hope that's not what you were saying.
It's rather plain that he said "willing," not "expected to." No one in this thread has advocated coercing people into pacifism.
And better than thy stroke; why swellest thou then?Yeah, I'm talking about what people SHOULD do.
Leave your dignity at the door.
...Values Dissonance is largely why they didn't peg him as evil. He was blatantly evil by our standards, I suppose.
Point still stands, though, that appeasement was only a "good idea" because Chamberlain didn't have all the facts. In general, it's about as useless as shooting yourself in the foot...
