Okay, some advanced space faring society gets itself a black hole. Normally, they would have to have some type of negative mass to make it an Einstein-Rosen bridge that can be used for FTL travel. I propose an alternative. If they had two super-massive objects (most likely stars) that orbit the black hole on opposite sides of each other, the gravity of both those stars might be able to open up the black hole in question.

The question I have for you guys is, would this work, or am I just talking from my ass here?

The bridge would collapse before you could cross it. You'd die messily.

You exist because we allow it and you will end because we demand it.

...wouldn't the black hole swallow up the stars?

If not, how do you propose we move either the stars or the black hole, or create a black hole in the first place without destroying ourselves?

I mean... even if the science holds up, how the fuck are we setting it up in the first place?

[up]They'd keep the stars in place. I've also heard that some planets obit around black holes, so it should be possible.

I have no idea, but I'm willing to bet that a society that's high on the Kardashev scale could do it.

Well, we haven't even hit one on the scale, so let's worry about more pressing issues first before we talk about moving stars and stabilizing black holes and other such bullshit nonsense...

[up][up]I'm not explicitly talking about us doing this. This is merely speculation on what can physically be done based on the lays of physics, not whether we can actually do it.

...who cares?

I mean, I grant you, it's cool, but it's so blatantly impossible, from a practical standpoint, that the Rule of Cool factor is lost on me in favor of wondering "is this what the scientists spend their time on, instead of the shit that actually matters?"

No, any combination of stars and blackholes will not open up a wormhole.

It's at times like this when I wish I understood relativity.

Well, I mean, I find it hard to empathize with the "this is cool!" argument when it's more proof that there are a lot of scientists proving random bullshit when they could be doing something useful.

Fuck the pure science, give us something we can work with.

This isn't exactly for scientists. It's for tropers who are bored and want to discuss pure science things like weaponized wormholes.

Well, unless you were the one who sat down and said "huh, lets do a shitton of boring theoretical eldritch math and see if this might possibly sort of work," that means there were scientists wasting their time with it...

You never know when seemingly theoretical fields will turn out to have practical applications.

Besides, I'd say the question of whether time travel is possible, is pretty darn important, even if the answer is almost certainly no.

Well excuse me for thinking that scientists actually wanted to do something to help people instead of solving math so complex it breaks lesser minds and accomplishing nothing actually useful in the process...

But if everyone thought like that we wouldn't have modern technology.

Why is that? It's practically feasible to, say, build a computer in due time. You just have to get the other technologies necessary to do that. We can't even get to goddamned Alpha Centauri and they're researching on how to move black holes. That is pointless research...

Number theory was studied for centuries before anyone came up with cryptography.

I don't think we're ever going to move black holes regardless. If we are eventually going to, it's not something we should be worrying about right now...

It doesn't matter. Scientists aren't wasting their time on this, it's just some tropers with too much time on their hands thinking shit up for fun.

No, I have something else. We need to create a device of some sort to open a hole to penetrate the usual fabric of space and time, and reach the dimension which is like a subterreanean secret passage between the stars. Once scientists "discover" that, it will change our understanding of the universe forever.

That's the thing, people say alot of things are impossible based on the current understanding of science. The current understanding of science is imperfect and hasn't managed to bridge the gap between quantum theory and relativity, or explain the precise mechanism of evolution or the brain. There are many mysterious phenomena and previously unknown factors yet to be uncovered. And when they are found, they will shake the world to its core.

However, any new discoveries still have to obey the classical limit, and there's reason to believe that a unified theory will make time travel impossible anyway.
