It's part of formula Butch Hartman uses in his shows,I think so anyway

It's pretty standard Butch Hartman. A concept that has genuine potential and promise (okay, maybe not TUFF Puppy, that one's got a pretty dumb premise)...basically no originality whatsoever when it comes to the characters. The characters tend to either be riffs on something (like, Danny is a very obvious expy of Peter Parker) or they're complete stereotypes, usually taken to a really strange level (Sam's an obvious example here, and Tucker is kind of like three entirely separate stereotypes mushed together without rhyme or reason. Casanova wannabe, nerd and book dumb for some reason).

Anyone know why Danny x Ember is so popular?

Most prominent male character with most liked female villain (though it's more common the other way around) is almost always going to be a huge ship, especially if one of them is believed by the fandom to be Troubled, but Cute. Right up there with "most prominent female character and second most prominent female character."

Just to clairfy, Keswick isn't actually a dog. He's just a Cartoon Creature.

I'm more of a Danny x Valerie shipper myself, but meh.

Because Ember is awesome and hot, and therefore must be shipped with the character the fanboys can self-insert into the most.

[up][up] For real. I tend to not really ship at all, but I remember being disappointed as a kid when Danny ended up with Sam instead of Valerie.

[up]Most of them stemming from the largely flat characters. Apart from Jazz, Danny's supporting cast wasn't exactly compelling. The villains made the show.

His family were better supporting characters than Sam or Tucker in all honesty

Vlad Plasmius is one of the baddest villains in animation, imo. Technus was also really cool, and Skulker...well he was that cool guy that never did anything actually cool, like Boba Feet. Actually, let me rephrase that: Skulker was cool in any episode where he wasn't the main villain.

Jack and Maddie were hilarious, but other than that, I agree that the heroes aren't very good.

No, Jazz was one of the best things about the show. Valerie was also a lot more interesting then Tucker and Sam as well (as a friend and a love interest).

I personally never liked Sam.

[up]I thought Sam was fine, but she was just so self-righteous and unnecessarily militant. If anything, at least her romance with Danny was set up pretty well.

Tucker is the real problem for me. He was always so one-dimensionally annoying and wimpy. He was just the black best friend to me.

Clockwork. Valerie. Jack and Maddie. Jazz. Literally, any protagonist was more interesting than the main trio.

Sam was a stereotype taken a bit too far. Tucker was like two entirely seperate stereotypes mushed together. He was a nerd, but he was also the dumb womanizer. It doesn't work very well.

I did like how Jack and Maddie genuinely loved each other. It could have turned into an old sitcom type thing where you genuinely wonder why they're still together, but instead they come off as loving each other both in spite of and because of their flaws. It's certainly better than the other set of parents from a Butch Hartman show, Mr and Mrs Turner, who are just awful, neglectful people.

[up]As much as I loved Fairly Oddparents as a kid, I can't stand the majority of the characters in that show. The concept of the show (and the execution) is so well done, but a lot of it relies on the misery of a child. Danny Phantom is still Butch Hartman's best show, in my opinion.

-Socrates hat on-

Do most of our favorite cartoons not rely on the misery of someone, if not a child? Is a miserable child really a detriment to the show?

A teenage nerd who hits on girls and is bad at it? That's believable enough to me. I don't think him being a nerd was the reason it didn't work. You can be smart and be stupid when it comes to people skills. It didn't work because it's a flat and formulaic character gag, that you come to expect after seeing it enough times.

Tucker was boring, that's pretty much his issue. His character archetype has been used so many times by this point that he comes across as kinda forgettable really. Sam was memorable but for all the wrong reasons. While she wasn't quite a goth stereotype she came across as annoyingly militant about her beliefs and very hypocritical on top of that in the way she treated Danny. I personally also believe that her romance with him wasn't done very well as they basically extended it for several seasons but never really gave us a reason as to why he would like her.

I think part of the issues with both of these characters is that they were not really given episodes to develop. Jazz and Valerie got plenty of episodes with Character Development but these two never did.
