It's been brought up before, but the thread got lost. This is a bad name, as it's about morality and behavior, and it only rarely involves a true red shirt.

I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.

Second the motion. Anyone have ideas for a good name?

While we're at it, the description is a mess. It starts off by saying how, in contrast to real life, soldiers in fiction act just like anyone else. Then it turns around and talks about how this means they're all Sociopathic Soldiers who treat war like a game, show no remorse over killing, and are generally Jerkasses at best. Unless you have a very cynical view of human nature, description 1 does not seem to match with description 2.

[up]Not quite as incongruous as you make it out to be - just remember that the details about being "just like everybody else" tend to involve killing people.

There is now a single proposition rename crowner for this trope here. I agree that a rename is in order because the trope is pretty distanced from the meaning of red shirts used in a good number of other tropes. I feel like that might lead to some misuse or at least some lack of usage.

Standard Redshirt Procedure found in: 27 articles, excluding discussions.

This title has brought 124 people to the wiki from non-search engine links since 20th FEB '09.

As for possible new names, Fictional Soldiers Are Unprofessional and Blood Thirsty Soldiers come to mind for me. The former might be a bit too direct and the latter might not totally fit this trope though. All Soldiers Are Socipaths or All Soldiers Are Unprofessional may work too, but the first of those two might overlap too much with Socipathic Soldier.

I believe we have a winner. Is everyone okay with moving on?

Yep, although I still stand by my point that the description is somewhat schizophrenic.

Calling the rename-or-not crowner. Blank alt-names crowner attached.

I don't think much of this trope. The premise is flawed. I just don't buy the suggestion that all fictional soldiers are gung-ho and all real soldiers in all armies at all times are professional. In any case being caught up with comparing fiction with reality seems unhelpful in this case. So I think we might need to do more than a rename here.

Calling the crowner in favour of All Soldiers Are Unprofessional.

Not going to star this, though, because Camacan's objection still stands.

I also have an issue with the description - as mentioned before, there's a rather serious dissonance between

Fictional soldiers — unless the entire point of the piece is to show the dehumanization of war — are essentially just like anyone else.

and

In short, fictional soldiers are often portrayed as enjoying and, indeed, revelling in combat, almost like a video game.

These name options are flawed. Let's scrap this set and see if we can come up with something that doesn't sound like a compliant.

The trope is not the pervasiveness of the idea, it is the idea.

Gung Ho Soldier is a trope. All Soldiers Are Gung Ho is a complaint.

I'll cut this one. It failed. If we need the Gung-Ho Soldier trope, it can go to YKTTW.

Don't cut this until we have a chance to clean up the wicks, please.

Edit: Never mind, it seems they're already gone.
