As for recommendations, I'll toss my hat in for Child of Light as well, especially since you mentioned Grandia. The game's battle system is seemingly inspired by it.
I'm also enjoying Stranger of Sword City a lot, but it can be very unforgiving and it's light on story, though it has more than your typical DRPG. It's a game that in spite of not finishing it yet I still find myself coming back to it when the mood strikes me for some hardcore dungeon crawling.

As a note if you go for Trails of Cold Steel 1 and 2... you'll want to play those back to back. Also, Cold Steel 1 definitely has a Persona 4 feel in some respects.
