Use it as an item, and it casts Return. Useful when a battle goes completely south.

Attack with it, and it'll use a "random" spell. What's actually happening is it run through a list of every Black and White spell in order, so use it enough times and you can prep it to use a specific spell you want. Useful for niche boss strategies involving stuff like Death or Berserk.

So here's a thought. Of all the classes I've used to completion, I have yet to use knight, mystic knight, and time mage. I'm thinking of doing my third run as a random run, pledging for those three and I'm not sure what my fourth class would be. I'm thinking mime just for the hell of it.

Power rod is also a good rod to use for berserking.

Also if I get around to a second run, I want to do the infamous never completed run. For funsies.

Hmm. Can't complete the fork tower (like a normal person), so that's a crystal. No real Ao E outside of kick. Dragoon gives decent damage + way to drain MP. Geomancer...I suppose it gives a form of magic damage. Berserker...damage and randomness, yay!? Monk could boost the survivability of others with HP +30%.

Hmm. Has it really never been done? This doesn't seem impossible, or any harder then some other random challenges.

I'm sure someone has completed the game with a Monk/Berserker/Geomancer/Dragoon party. It's just one of those parties that doesn't have a lot of obvious synergies. Early on you can give Barehanded to your Berserker (and Geomancer, when !Gaia doesn't produce good results), but once fists start to drop off in power there isn't really much cross-class stuff you can do.

I originally thought this party was the one that gained its notoriety as the one that revenantkioku had way back in the early days of the Fiesta that caused him to pioneer the "Mage Masher against Omniscient" strategy, but that was Monk/Berserker/Beastmaster/Dancer.

Blue Mage/Summoner/Ninja/Dragoon run is complete! Didn't bother with Omega or Shinryu, though.

I might do another run before the end.

So I'm not actually doing the Fiesta because this is my first time ever playing FFV. Well, I've played it before but only for a bit. This time I intend to beat it.

I just figured my playthrough and thoughts and questions can go in here as they still pertain to FFV? It's up to you guys....

Reina huh? I wonder if that's right or if it's just some Japanese rangauge going on.

I like the SUCCESS written at the top of the screen after battles.

Galuf: Great! Who's idea was it anyhow to steal a @#* PIRATE SHIP?!?!?

Whoa Galuf, watch the language. This isn't an FFVII, this is a kids-friendly game. I enjoy the plethora of punctuation marks though.

Oh dear the four crystals are in great danger, who could have ever seen this coming. Let me guess, our intrepid heroes will arrive JUST a second too late to save each one of them, resulting in the end of the world which is only narrowly averted by killing the final boss.

Ever notice our heroes can never actually succeed or win at anything of substance until the very end of the game? In fact, in pretty much everY FF game, our heroes are directly responsible for the world ending in the first place.

I can't wait to see how Bartz and co. bungle things. Maybe they're like "you know..this X-Death guy? He doesn't seem so bad. We can trust him."

FINAL FANTASY!

So if I'm remembering right, Faris is Reina's or Lenna's or whatever's sister. Awful nice of Spirit Dad not to say anything to her.

Okay I thought about it and these Jobs felt the most right to me.

Bartz: Thief. This guy is not the Warrior type. He's certainly no Knight. Reina: White Mage. Kinda tailor-made for the role, to be honest. Galuf; Black Mage. Old vaguely mystical guy who knows stuff but can't remember. He's Tellah and thus should have powerful magic. Faris: Knight. It was either this or Monk. I'm not really satisfied with either choice for her but I didn't have a lot of options at the moment. I just figure, she had a shield, and she would have had to be really strong and tough to make it a as a pirate captain. Thus she should have the Job that is the strongest and toughest.

A rather humorous way to reveal Faris' sex. Although, Bartz and Galuf keep calling her "he"...

The tentacle boss thing in the canal was pretty simple. Galuf's Bolts spells wrecked it. Although, I'm curious. How useful is Stealing in this game? Do bosses only have one item to steal?Like that boss only had a Tonic, not exactly an item worth wasting turns over trying to get.

Poor Hydra... I hope he's still alive.

Wait...they didn't realize Faris was a woman? I thought that was the whole point of them being stupid and getting hearts above their heads after looking at her sleeping. I'm so confused.

I suppose I should mention I'm I'm loving the fact this game gives you oodles and oodles of "GP." I can't remember having this much money so easily in an RPG in a long time. Of course I've been playing a lot of Western RP Gs and they're stupid about this sort of thing. What do you mean shopkeepers don't have infinite money and supplies????

Alas poor Galuf died against Siren. Her Squeeze move did like 100 damage and he was just a few points too low. I didn't go into the battle at full HP or MP so that didn't help. I used up the one Phoenix Down I found when she killed Reina. Oh well. I have so much damn money that I'm not really worried.

Everyone is Level 9 and has Level 3 of their Job. Well, except Faris. Knight takes way more ABP for whatever reason. She's only at 40/50.

What does ABP do anyway? Like, Bartz is learning abilities, but the others all just get "Black/White/Guard Level 2" and I don't get it. Is that like Fira or Cura?

I think this is a good place to stop and post. 4 hours in, having a good time. The music for the Ship Graveyard was pretty cool.

Favorite character at present is Faris.

Also I dunno about this whole mixing and matching of classes. Doesn't that defeat the point of Classes when you can create broken combinations? A mage with the health and defense of a knight for example.

I suppose, in a way, you can create your own classes, which is kinda cool. A Knight with White Magic would be a Paladin like Cecil for example. But I dunno.

Yeah, mixing abilities allows you to create some really powerful characters, but that's sort of the point of the job system as FFV does it. Personally, I enjoy that setup more than a static class system like FFIII had, but both have merits.

As for "Black Magic level 2" and such? Magic in FFV comes in tiers. Each level contains 3 spells. When you gain Black level 1 or 2, you're basically improving the "black magic" command for cross-classing. A character who currently is a Mage can use every spell you know for that class, but if they cross-class, they can only use spells dependent on the tier of magic that character has unlocked.

To give an example: if Galuf learns Black level 1, he'll be able to use the level 1 Black Magic spells (Fire, Blizzard, Thunder) if he equips Black Magic as a different class. If he learns Black level 2, he'll be able to use those as well as the level 2 spells (Poison, Sleep, Toad), and so on.

Other skills are more singular, like the Knight's guard, and some are passive, like the Monk's Barehanded (the character equipped with that has the strength of a Monk if they're barehanded)

As for different class leveling speeds; yeah, not all classes ave the same number of abilities (one of them has exactly 2 skills to learn), and some abilities are considered stronger, and therefore tougher to learn, than others. One particular skill demands 999 ABP. Oh, that's what ABP IS, by the way. It's basically EXP for your classes.

Reina is Lenna in all other translations of the game. The katakana for her name is レナ (Rena) so yeah, it's an R/L thing.

The scene where Bartz and Galuf make heart eyes at Faris is basically a "oh wow what a pretty man BUT NO HOMO" moment. So the actual "Faris is a woman" reveal is in fact the scene in the ship graveyard.

Stealing in FFV is kind of a mixed bag. Some enemies will give you nothing but potions (and hi-potions, later in the game), but some enemies have weapons/equipment that are either unique or can't be bought or found until a later point in the game. You can only steal one item per battle at a flat 40% rate (although the Thief Glove accessory will double that to 80%), but some enemies have a rare steal, which has a chance of roughly 4% (after the game checks for successful steal/unsuccessful steal). If you're looking for a rare steal but get the common steal instead, you're going to have to reset or do the fight again to get the rare steal.

Re: the mixing and matching of classes, you definitely don't have to go crazy with it if you don't want to. You can easily just use the job system to make simple hybrid classes like giving your White and Black Mages a second school of magic like summoning or time magic, giving Spellblade from a Mystic Knight (Sorcerer in your translation) to a regular Knight, etc. You can definitely make some broken combinations, but the game is kind of particular in what stats get passed on when you change jobs. Your HP stat is always tied to whatever job you're in (unless you have the HP +10%/20% ability from a Monk equipped), so a Knight will always have more HP than a White Mage. Other stats are transferred from other jobs depending on what abilities you have equipped. For example, if you give a Knight the White Magic command, the Knight will now have the magic score of a White Mage. Enlong already mentioned how Barehanded can give any job the strength of a Monk, so that's the same principle.

Also, some jobs will learn abilities that they have already have as an automatic passive or as their default job command. The Knight, for example, doesn't really learn many new abilities that directly benefit it: Cover is a passive automatically active while in the Knight job, Guard is its default command, and Equip Shield/Armor/Sword is all equipment that a Knight can automatically equip. Learning those abilities just means that if you switch Faris to another job, she'll be able to use any of those as her secondary ability even though she's not a Knight anymore. So if you want your Knight to do more than hit things with her sword, take hits for her friends, and STEELGUARD, you can switch to another job, learn a few abilities, and then switch her back to a Knight and give her one of those abilities as her secondary command.

I appreciate all the responses and info. Thank you both.

Although, for Stealing, does this mean I'll have to consult a guide? And that when I inevitably fight Gilgamesh I might have to reload multiple times? I've only fought him in FFXII but I was led to understand that stealing Genji equipment was a thing started in V. But if I can only steal one item per battle, I might end up stealing a worthless potions or whatever from him and have to redo the whole boss fight in order to get the Genji stuff?

I don't really want to follow a FAQ for this, and that one steal per battle thing could get really irritating....

Anyway, as for making hybrid classes, I guess I'll just wait and see what options become available at the next crystal. I wouldn't mind mixing things up a little.

A majority of gear just isn't worth refighting if you badly want them. However using thief to steal high potions on the fire ship is an amazing idea early game.

The only thing that I found absolutely vital, and depending on builds you might too, is getting a Golden hairpin from the Famed Mimic Gogo.

Oh! That's the fifth party member, right? I was told there are only five party members in this game (which is kinda disappointing) and I totally forgot about Gogo. He's in FFVI as well for whatever reason I believe. That's actually where I've heard the most about him.

Gogo is actually an optional boss in FFV, not a party member like in VI. The fifth party member is actually a bit of a spoiler, which I won't say anything more about for now in case you want to experience the plot as unspoiled as possible.

Also re: Gilgamesh and the Genji equipment, those are common steals, not rare steals, so you don't have to worry about getting the common item instead. But there is one fight in which the Genji item is only stealable after Gilgamesh morphs to his second form (although I think you can still steal the common item that his first form has with no consequence).

Yeah I would like to remain as unspoiled as possible. I hear FFV has a very....light narrative compared to IV and VI but there's still a story here and I want to appreciate it as much as possible.

But that's cool, I look forward to seeing who the fifth party member is. In all my years of being part of the FF fandom and posting on boards like this, I can't remember ever hearing of his or her name. I know Bartz, Galuf, Faris and Lenna - I hear about them rather a lot. Well, maybe not Reina but the first three definitely. Party Mmeber #5 though, I can't recall hearing anything.

So would you all recommend I stick with Thief then? Is Stealing worth it in this game or only at certain points? Maybe switch Bartz to a new class and just have that job use Steal instead. (when I have more Jobs to choose from I mean)

I would generally recommend the GBA version over the PS 1 version for a first-time(and every other time) playthrough. The PS 1 version kinda soured me on the game, particularly on its story, when I first played it. It wasn't until the GBA version when I started to really appreciate the game, including the story.

Helpful Scripts and Stylesheets here.
