Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I live in the South.
I'll tell some random stranger that I'm an atheist LOOOOOOOONG before I'll even remotely tell them I'm a progressive.
New Survey coming this weekend! What is this in reference too?
I assume the hatred between Right and Left
That
New Survey coming this weekend!Yeah, I have to keep my political convictions very close to my chest around here.
It's just plain unsafe.

Oh really when?Sometimes I wonder how it would be possible to defuse this situation we have in this country right now.

"Sandwiches are probably easier to fix than the actual problems" -HylarnThank God it's the other way around in my country. One of my classmates last year kept complaining how unfair it was that he was scolded by the school for making the Nazi salute in front of a jewish girl.

Life is unfair...@IFWander: Incidentally, it's been seen before in the United States...In the early 1860s, which doesn't bode well at all.
What would it take? Step one: forcing the media to actually attend to reality.
Avatar SourceI live in a conservative home. I don't have to worry about my safety when it comes to my progressive mindset, but I keep quiet anyway because I find arguing politics to be now trouble than it's generally worth
I live in a pretty red state in the South, but in a pretty blue area of it.
It's always fascinating to here people's political views, because I've found that most people around me are in conflict with something I think one way or another. And that's just from a conservative perspective or anything.
I live in one of if not the deepest blue part of the nation, so I feel like I live in kind of a weird bubble. The one Republican in my circle that i know is pretty reasonable even if we disagree (he's not a Trump fan) and the rest are dyed-in-the-wool Democrats.
"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." -Thomas EdisonI was a conservative living in a mostly progressive community. I did tend to get into arguments with people, though luckily I think was still well-liked in general.
"Any campaign world where an orc samurai can leap off a landcruiser to fight a herd of Bulbasaurs will always have my vote of confidence"Try growing up and going through Facebook, and all those friends you added in High School turned out to be complete deplorable pieces of shit and that was before Trump.
New Survey coming this weekend!I don't talk about politics often but generally I've been the rare Democrat amongst a sea of Republicans. It hasn't really caused much problems in that I've had an easy time find common ground with others (generally in shared militarism). Interestingly my deeply conservative grandparents absolutely loath Trump (I think they either didn't vote in 2016 or voted for Gary Johnson).
"Sandwiches are probably easier to fix than the actual problems" -HylarnI had to lie about voting for Clinton since by super conservative family would have kicked me out of the house.
Mmm, day before the election everyone at work was told to either vote Trump or don't bother returning the next day. Most of my family worship him so I try my damnedest to avoid political discussions; a few of them gave a little speech at their church after the election that if Trump began a "cleansing" they'd surrender anyone in the family or pull the trigger themselves if the choice came down to it.
Being a registered democrat in my area seriously hurts your chances at finding a job (many employers check public voter records). If your political affiliations are made known you can kiss your position goodbye unless you're in a spot where you're good friends with your employer. Local dem offices have had to install break resistant glass due to the bricks being hurled through their windows.

That's certainly not a good thing.
On a tangent, Trump's approval rating appears to be recovering after an absolutely abysmal Summer for him, presumably due to his abrupt embrace of bipartisanship and acceptable responses to the various Hurricanes this Summer.
Stuff like that makes it a wonder that discrimination based on party affiliation isn't illegal. Obviously it would still happen, but it would at least be something. And from the sounds of it, it's definitely needed.
That kind of law would also protect fascists, you realize.
Wait it isn't illegal in the US? I'm pretty sure it's illegal in other countries (I believe that the UK had to make special legislation to make it legal to fire people from certain jobs for being member of the BNP).
Facist isn't a political party, plus you can still fire someone for bigotry even if their bigotry is a political view.
You can't only fire them for their political party membership or vote casting is the thing.

Oh it's plenty common in the Presidential Democracies of Latin America, and generally a sign of an imminent political crisis.
