Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

FBI DIRECTOR JAMES COMEY TRIED TO REVEAL RUSSIAN TAMPERING MONTHS BEFORE ELECTION
Well before the Department of Homeland Security and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence accused the Russian government of tampering with the U.S. election in an October 7 statement, Comey pitched the idea of writing an op-ed about the Russian campaign during a meeting in the White House’s situation room in June or July.
“He had a draft of it or an outline. He held up a piece of paper in a meeting and said, ‘I want to go forward, what do people think of this?’” says a source with knowledge of the meeting, which included Secretary of State John Kerry, Attorney General Loretta Lynch, the Department of Homeland Security’s director and the national security adviser.

The other national security leaders didn’t like the idea, and White House officials thought the announcement should be a coordinated message backed by multiple agencies, the source says. “An op-ed doesn’t have the same stature, it comes from one person.”
The op-ed would not have mentioned whether the FBI was investigating Donald Trump’s campaign workers or others close to him for links to the Russians’ interference in the election, a second source with knowledge of the request tells Newsweek. Comey would likely have tried to publish the op-ed in The New York Times, and it would have included much of the same information as the bombshell declassified intelligence report released January 6, which said Russian President Vladimir Putin tried to influence the presidential election, the source said
I read the headline and was a bit pissed. Until, I read it.
Obama made the right call.
An op-ed would've been an terrible TERRIBLE idea. Holy shit.
New Survey coming this weekend!Yeah, something that big has to come as an official report and press release, backed by at least the FBI and CIA. A one-person op-ed published in a newspaper would not be nearly as impactful.
Why an Op-ed instead of a press release of some sort?
If you were going to split California wouldn't doing it along north/south lines make more sense?
Trump delenda estI give Comey no credit. Son of a bitch handed Trump the Presidency.
He will never, ever, EVER live that down.
A British man is encouraging a split of one of our biggest and most populous states. I think we can say safely that making sense is not a priority.
@A Democrat challenging Ted Cruz: I have no idea whether or not he has a chance of winning- conventional wisdom says that Texas is a red state and Cruz is big name, with would imply an easy race for him, but Texas has been drifting closer to becoming a swing state and Cruz' reputation is a tad complicated these days. So who knows. I do, however, think that taking Texas is the most plausible way they could end up controlling the senate in 2018, so it's definitely worth a shot, however long that shot may be.
Energy Department climate office bans use of phrase ‘climate change’.
Fuck these people for bringing down ther rest of the world with them. We're all gonna drown because of their short-sightness.

It is sometimes an appropriate response to reality to go insane. Its like Stephen Harper was given control of a larger economy...
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. No, Harper was bad, but he wasn't an idiot who was doing things specifically to spite Paul Martin (the PM before Harper) and the Liberal Party.
And the climate change thing. Good luck, USA, when your coasts are flooded and you've lost your three most important cities.

Not Three Laws compliant.I don't think he knows a damn thing about how to fight it...
How about hour to take opioids?

It's curious that opioids are being handled by a special commission and not the DOJ...huh.
It's actually not wierd. The current opoid epidemic came about largely as a result of the mis-advertising and over-reliance on prescription opoids.. At the state level, most people have realized that handling it as a public health problem is much more important than handling it as a law enforcement problem.
Mind, this is Christie and Donald we're talking about so there's no expectation of this commission being handled well.
@Zend, I was referring specifically to the parallels in their climate change policies (ie: gagging experts, and lying outright using government resources).
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Oh, okay. In that case, yeah I agree.
Not Three Laws compliant.US Dreamer arrested by ICE last month is now released on Bail.

Lying's second nature when it comes to government, particularly America's.
Your momma's so dumb she thinks oral sex means talking dirty. And once again, to all news sites that auto-play their videos: please eat a grenade.
Your momma's so dumb she thinks oral sex means talking dirty.Trump's approval dropped again. It's now at 35 %
How low can we go?
"You can't change the world without getting your hands dirty."Trump still has over 80% Republican Approval and close to zero Democrat approval-by this point, most independents will have formed an opinion. SO, pretty much every percentage point from here out should be mostly Republican voters, and that total needs to drop below 20% for any real heat to be felt. I would say his approval ratings with just Republicans would have to plunge below 40% to see any movement.
so what will it take for republicans to finally start disliking him?
Him working with Democrats, probably.

Look with century eyes... With our backs to the arch And the wreck of our kind We will stare straight ahead For the rest of our lives
Speaking of polls, Trump's approval rating dropped a percentage again (35%), disproving my belief that it was just going to bounce back in a day.
