Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

In general, a party is only anti establishment for so long as it's not in charge.
"Any campaign world where an orc samurai can leap off a landcruiser to fight a herd of Bulbasaurs will always have my vote of confidence"Obama's speech is stunning. I'm loving every second.
God, I love this man.
Times like this makes me feel the two term limit was a mistake.

"Don't boo: vote" could be a perfect motto for the campaign.
"Can't make an omelette without breaking some children." -BurObama is fucking nailing it with the gospel of pragmatism.
Edit: Birther jokes, heh.

WOW. Just... wow. Seriously.
Why did we limit the number of terms to two again?
Doctor Who — Long Way Around: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/13536044/1/Doctor-Who-Long-Way-AroundWasn't it because FDR kept winning?
Ah.
Why didn't we ever revoke the two term limit again?
Doctor Who — Long Way Around: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/13536044/1/Doctor-Who-Long-Way-AroundBecause it's a Constitutional amendment and thus too much of a pain in the ass to change.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.Probably Obama's best speech ever. Holy fuck.
Can we like keep him forever? Please?
New Survey coming this weekend!Oh.
Dag-freaking-nabbit!
Amen to that. At the least, we should still have him give a speech every DNC, because he's just that GOOD.

Doctor Who — Long Way Around: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/13536044/1/Doctor-Who-Long-Way-AroundPlus, it's not a good idea to have the same leader that long. Could you imagine if we kept electing a senile Ronald Reagan? Or Bush?
Bringing in a new leader every 8 years is smart. It gives us a chance at a president more suited to our current atmosphere and culture.
I understand that. I really do.
Doesn't stop me from wanting to keep Obama. Seriously, can't we keep him? Please? Pretty pleeeeease?
Doctor Who — Long Way Around: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/13536044/1/Doctor-Who-Long-Way-AroundYeah, could you imagine four consecutive Obama terms? Sixteen years of President Barack Obama.
I would be okay with that.
Eh, I don't think it's a good idea to keep him around for that long. Hillary will probably have similar positions on most subjects anyway. I also think it's about time we had a female president.
Obama will probably have a slot at every DNC, so long as he is alive and well (and the Dems don't go totally bonkers). Carter was there last time and still spoke through a video.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. We gave one of the greatest Presidents of Our lifetimes one of the shittiest Congresses of all time.
New Survey coming this weekend!"America has never been about what one person says he’ll do for us. It’s always been about what can be achieved by us, together, through the hard, slow, sometimes frustrating, but ultimately enduring work of self-government."
"Hillary Clinton is that woman in the arena. She’s been there for us – even if we haven’t always noticed. And if you’re serious about our democracy, you can’t afford to stay home just because she might not align with you on every issue. You’ve got to get in the arena with her, because democracy isn’t a spectator sport. America isn’t about “yes he will.” It’s about “yes we can.” And we’re going to carry Hillary to victory this fall, because that’s what the moment demands."
Loved these quotes from Obama.

It's funny. When I was a kid I remember being really pissed off that Obama won because I thought he'd ruin the country with his liberal ideas. Now I'm a staunch supporter of him. In some ways I don't think he's left enough. Eight years really can change people.
As a kid I was more worried that Obama was basically a member of the Progressive Unicorn Brigade as Ambar likes to call it. But he's got one of the most level heads to occupy a shoulder I've ever seen.
Huh, that's funny. They must have gotten the names mixed up. That's the statement on the RNC's night of empty rhetoric, is what that is.

Doctor Who — Long Way Around: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/13536044/1/Doctor-Who-Long-Way-AroundI this point I think Trevor was right, Obama is looking more like that ex boyfriend you shoudnt really broke up and now you miss after see how shitty your current boyfriend is.
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"
I would guess the reason that the RNC is calling for change now is because a smart black man has been in office for eight years and gay people are getting married.
That jackass ranting about the TPP has some nerve interrupting the president who's standing between him and Trump.
