Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

There's not a whole lot positive to say about Kissinger's legacy. Even if you were the type to gravedance, the negative effects of his foreign policy crimes will outlast him by a fair bit.

@Blueace: And what concessions will the Democrats eventually exact from what's left of the moderates (once the latter finally realize they need a caucus of their own)?

I wonder what Jimmy Carter thinks of the whole Kissinger thing, but then again it's been only half an hour. Hopefully someone's told him.
Carter outliving Kissinger, though. I did not expect that, seriously.
There's beauty in even the smallest moments. So, with that out of your system, when do you expect the Speaker to be kicked out this time?
Wake me up at your own risk.I think that if he's actually willing to work with the Democrats and isn't a bozo like McCarthy, he'll be able to get Democratic support and keep the job. As enjoyable as it is to watch the Republican caucus melt down, a functional government is important enough for us to save someone who's useful.
Yeah, but...who the hell actually fits that description among the GOP House critters?

Disgusted, but not surprisedJohnson is already too sane for the Freedom Caucus. The question is whether he's sane enough for the Democrats.
Hey now, don't go comparing people to Bozo.
At least he's a friendly innocent Clown.
Watch SymphogearI mean, Johnson survived passing that extension, I think he'll be fine. Plus, he's so inexperienced the Democrats will likely find him useful.
On an unrelated note, seems that's the end of the Nixon cabinet. Weirdly enough, I was thinking about Kissinger and Carter yesterday.
He/HimI thought about him when he turned 100, but that was about it. (Until today, of course).
There's beauty in even the smallest moments.Who did he make a deal with to live so long anyways? I was always shocked when I remembered he was somehow still alive.
The guy won't be missed. I hope that people in the current government don't whitewash his legacy but actually have the balls to call him out. But knowing how politics is someone will probably commission a memorial or monument
Calling him out now that he is dead is pretty meaningless lip service.
Guy should've been prosecuted when he was alive.
He was one of the biggest Karma Houdini's in US History.

Honestly, the best-case scenario is that the govenment is just not gonna say shit about him.

Welcome to Estalia, gentlemen.A lot of Americans associated with the broader Indochina conflict should've gotten the Nuremberg treatment.
Unfortunately, this is the U.S., where the president can authorize an invasion of the Netherlands should the ICC prosecute military personnel.
Kissinger was a rich fuck with friends everywhere, dude was untouchable.
I just noticed a detail in the news about Johnson. They mentioned him compromising with Democrats for Ukraine funding. So they actually got a package for Ukraine voted? If so, Good. Guess I missed that part.
"And as long as a sack of shit is not a good thing to be, chivalry will never die."It's been less than a week since we had to mod post in this thread with a warning about gravedancing. But here we are again...
This time I've added it to the pinned post as well, but I'll repeat it here for visibility:
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.
Is that clear?
