Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Reminder that Newsom and DeSantis are going to debate on Thursday. Probably not gonna be a big splash now that Florida Man has fallen from the limelight, but might be fun to watch.
There is also the angle that people can be fairly selfish and raising children requires people to give up things they don't want to.
I've met my share of people who don't want children because it would put a dent in their careers, hobbies and fun time.

"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."I genuinely don't know the details of those: are there genuine health issues or is this just more anti-nuclear fearmongering?
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"It's the later.
Nuclear bombs for the most part release materials with a half life measured in hours.
There is a reason both Hiroshima and Nagasaki are highly populated even to this day, dispite being the only population centers to ever be bombed.
To get any of the nastiness of radiation poisoning you basicly have to be in the blast, or the bomb has to be detonated at ground level which weapons were generaly not, because they also attenuated the blast.
Coldeater creek might have more merit since nuclear waste has a much longer period of causing problems then bombs do, but it would depend on what exactly the kind of waste involved there is...

The US, Qatar, Egypt, and Israel meet again to negotiate an extension of the ceasefire in Gaza.
The Prime Minister of Qatar, Mohammed Bin Abdul Rahman al-Thani, is hosting CIA Director Bill and his Egyptian and Israeli equivalents.
A CIA spokesperson declined to comment on Burns' plans. Qatari and Israeli officials also declined to comment.
One of the hostages released by Hamas this Sunday was American Abigail Edan, who turned four last week.
The Coldwater Creek one is legit though. It's genuinely contaminated by nuclear waste stored improperly and it got downplayed and hidden for decades and there are communities with high rates of health issues because of it.
Not Three Laws compliant.I can buy that one might be more legit though, but it does need sourcing on what exactly the kind of waste there is...
Because most "nuclear waste" is just stuff like contaminated hazmat suits and the like, which has such a low level of radiation you could hug it and be fine, and those leaking wont cause much of any problems.... even a lot of the more dangerous stuff should dilute in water pretty quickly to safe levels.
It would take something really nasty to cause actual issues, but those have happened before and I know of at least one coverup by the USSR on them, so Amercia doing it too wouldnt suprise me.

In that particular case, it's a bunch of nuclear refining having been done in St. Louis in the 50s (it was where some of the refining for the Manhattan Project happened) and then the waste was stored out in the open right next to the creek in decaying barrels for decades before most of it was shipped to a safe facility...but some of it was just straight up dumped into a landfill where it continued to leak into the creek.
On top of that, the cleaning process that was supposed to happen in the 70s kinda...didn't so the contaminated soil wasn't removed, that only started happening a few years ago.
It's legitimately contaminated and it still kinda is because of the shit job of clean-up that was done.

Not Three Laws compliant. The Act provides remuneration for people who contracted cancer or similar diseases as a result of being exposed to radioactive waste.
If you can't prove you were exposed, you won't get paid.
So I see no reason, not to include those places in the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act, is there something more here?
............
Besides the remunerations did not change since 1990, and at maximum you can get a one time only sum of 100,000 dollars.

Every Hero has his own way of eating yogurtIn that case there probably is some pretty nasty stuff in there, even if not from radiation, but from the industrial runoff for refining.
They should probaly get compensation yea.
But I still find it pretty hard to take radioactive water claims seriously when all of east asia is currently having a meltdown over waste water which is no more radioactive then an international flight being diluted by an entire ocean.
It kind of posions the well. :/
It's less the money and more the blocking of the bill that is the contention on my front.
If it was up to me, healthcare costs, cancer included, would come out of tax dollars by default.

In my experience, if the place being stated as being radioactive is really obscure, it's probably legit.
If only because no one has anything to gain from lying about a random tributary of the Mississippi River being contaminated.

Not Three Laws compliant.Family members of the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting victims offered to settle the $1.5 billion debt owed by conspiracy theorist Alex Jones.
Also, if he accepts this offer, Mr Jones will have to pay the families half of any income he earns over $9 million.
His lawyer Vickie Driver, argued that the $85 million was unrealistic, and that his client couldn't afford it.
..........
Alex Jones was sued by the families for $1.5 billion because they suffered emotional harm and harassment caused by him, claiming that the school massacre in 2012 was a hoax.
He lost the trial and later declared bankruptcy, but last month a judge ruled that this will not release him from paying the settlement.
The Lawyers of the SH families claimed that he continued to "enjoy his extravagant lifestyle" and that:

Every Hero has his own way of eating yogurtM84’s signature goes here.
My AO3 profile. Let sleeping cats lie and be cute and calming. The surprising part is that a judge noticed it and decided to keep him on the hook for it.
"And as long as a sack of shit is not a good thing to be, chivalry will never die."Yes, usually the surprising bit isn't when a rich asshole acts like an asshole. It's when they suffer actual consequences for being an asshole.
Disgusted, but not surprisedWhen it comes to Bankruptcies the Courts overall are VERY unforgiving, they have "Seen It All" they have seen every dirty trick in the book multiple times. Arrogant Asshats who think they can outsmart them do not fair well. Its advised that you be honest to a fault in a Bankruptcy, you'll usually fair better and might get away with some things. Try to hide assets/money ESPECIALLY if you have Judgements/Settlements against you? There are Judges who will take absolute GLEE in ripping you a new one and ordering the court to examine every financial transaction you have done for the past decade for ANYTHING remotely shady so they can seize it to pay off your bills.
Also in many states if you have a Judgement against you for defamation/malice those cannot be discharged in a Bankruptcy, right next to Tax Debt and Student Loans.
Yeah, money is the downfall for these kinds of people. Recall that Al Capone was convicted not for murders or mob crimes... but for tax evasion.
Some time ago (I think 2005), didn't Congress pass a law to make declaring bankruptcy harder, especially because they were annoyed that it was being "so easily abused"?
There's beauty in even the smallest moments. You mean this?

Every Hero has his own way of eating yogurtSeems like the MAGAts are starting to turn on Speaker Johnson
The brewing storm, crystallized by Johnson’s comments during a Wednesday meeting with GOP senators, is threatening to end what is left of the Louisiana Republican’s honeymoon running the House. On his right flank, some members are already asking behind closed doors whether Johnson might meet the same fate as the deposed Mc Carthy — though other GOP lawmakers see that speculation as bluster.
Johnson has antagonized conservatives most acutely by engaging in policy talks with fellow leaders, rather than pushing exclusively for base-pleasing wins that won’t survive in the Senate. That traditional approach won’t hurt Johnson with most of the House GOP — but as Mc Carthy’s ouster made clear, it only takes a handful of fed-up members to make a speaker’s life difficult.
The new speaker showcased his willingness to stand up to conservatives, as well as its limits, during his visit to the Senate. Inside the room, he delivered two messages: that he would call up an extension of government funding through the end of the fiscal year if lawmakers can’t reach a deal, and that he wants to see much of the House’s conservative border bill as part of any potential Senate agreement to aid Ukraine.
Johnson’s stance on government funding isn’t quite new — House Republican leaders have indicated that they wouldn’t pursue more patches and have no interest in a shutdown at the start of an election year. And his hard line on border talks amounts to a major setback for the Senate’s bipartisan work. Still, the GOP frustration with him goes beyond the Freedom Caucus.
“He continues to play games,” a livid Rep. Max Miller (R-Ohio) said in an interview. “We are talking about a man [who] 30 days ago said that he was an anti-CR guy. We are talking about a man 30 days ago that was anti-Ukraine funding. ... It shows me he was never really morally convicted in his positions to begin with.
“He just did a 180 on everything he believed in,” Miller added, “and that to me is disgusting.”
So, bets on how long his replacement will last? Or how many tries it will take to have one this time?

In other words, the Post Article was written by an incel. :P It certainly shares the idea that assholes should be able to get married without having to change their behavior to be attractive partners.
