Athleticism is no more pointless than fiction.
Besides, that kind of attitude sounds like a recipe for heart disease and/or diabetes in later life.
^ Doesn't mean you're not a geek; you might just be a geek who doesn't make certain common mistakes.

Welcome To TV Tropes | How To Write An Example | Text-Formatting Rules | List Of Shows That Need Summary | TV Tropes Forum | Know The StaffI actually learned the rules of Cricket on TV Tropes....
Just sayian.
Athleticism is very important, since it keeps one in good health, unlike our pop-culture obsessed bullshit.
^^ I don't agree that "pop-culture obsessed bullshit" is necessarily less important than athleticism, but this probably isn't the place to debate that.
Welcome To TV Tropes | How To Write An Example | Text-Formatting Rules | List Of Shows That Need Summary | TV Tropes Forum | Know The StaffPlenty of knowledgeable and intelligent people are not looked down on or considered nerds/geeks/dorks... people perceived as that in general are socially awkward, and people don't want to hang out with people that are bad at socializing.
Don't forget that a good lot of "jocks" stay in the sport and excel in order to get scholarships so they can study what they want to, and indeed can get careers just as good/requiring as much intelligence as "nerd jobs". People are thinking way too much of jocks vs. nerds after high school.
My pride detector is starting to read dangerously high levels. Good heavens, the TT page just irked the hell out of me. I did this geeky thing, I know this arcane bit of trivia, I am smarter than the average sheeple, I am more geekier than thou art, and so on.
Nothing wrong identifying as a geek/nerd/dork/whatever, just like there's nothing wrong about being identified as a sports fan or a gearhead, or practically any other fandom-type of thing (unless it's illegal, maybe). It's when you start peering down your nose at all the other people due to your 'superior intellect' or what-have-you that you run into problems.
It's classic "Us versus Them" syndrome, and it never ends well. Well, I've yet to see it end well.
Trust me, I've been there. I've been the guy who flaunted my geek-cred, like it mattered, oozing smugness at every chance I could get. Guess what? No one either noticed or cared.
Happiness is zero-gee with a sinus cold.EDIT: Here at TV Tropes on a nostalgia trip, and looking at the JROTC thread made me think of other threads where athleticism was being discussed. One particular post in the other one was somewhat reasonable but inarticulate... but my posts in this thread had projection at their core. Nerds are not just nerds, and though I've had moments of being a bit jealous of those who were nerdy in more practical ways than I was, that had no bearing on what jealousy has to do with anything on the part of others. Not sure whether I may have realized that more than I let on or not.

Yes, there is a type of diabetes you can get even if athletic. How does that contradict what I was saying?
In any case, while cycling is pretty value neutral (as in, I don't think it would normally be thought to make a person less geeky), I think it could qualify as athletic if you're really serious about it.
And sports aren't pointless, anyway. I think you mean they don't appeal, or that they don't further any point that you care about.

Welcome To TV Tropes | How To Write An Example | Text-Formatting Rules | List Of Shows That Need Summary | TV Tropes Forum | Know The StaffYou know what s/he meant. The more common form of diabetes is linked to obesity.
Also, you kind of redefined the word athleticism to suit your argument.

^ Also that. However you want to get your exercise, you plainly aren't getting it by reading TV Tropes, which is the point.

Welcome To TV Tropes | How To Write An Example | Text-Formatting Rules | List Of Shows That Need Summary | TV Tropes Forum | Know The StaffAnd athleticism is pretty pointless anyway.
Really now?
I now want to make a thread about people saying shit is pointless when they really mean "I don't like this thing" or "I do not understand the appeal of this thing". And about the idea of anything having a point in the first place.

If someone wants to accuse us of eating coconut shells, then that's their business. We know what we're doing. - Achaan Chah^ I think I'd be interested to read that.

Depends how much you walk, run, and bike.
athleticism1.an active interest in sports.
2.an obsessive participation in physical activity

I love it when it does that.
Those flaws being "you could learn some of that stuff elsewhere" and "I don't care about that stuff"? I'm sorry, but neither struck me as a particularly good argument.
Besides, nobody's telling you to stop reading TV Tropes. I mean, we're all tropers here. All that I, for one, am objecting to is the notion that sports are pointless and you can't learn anything from them.

Sorry, you're right, you didn't say you couldn't learn from sports. You said you could learn more from TV Tropes, which I find... questionable, to say the least.
And you did say that you didn't care about athleticism. Or rather, you said athleticism is pointless, which is either expressing the opinion that you don't care about it, or else is simply wrong (well, unless you're saying everything is pointless, in which case why single out athleticism?).

Welcome To TV Tropes | How To Write An Example | Text-Formatting Rules | List Of Shows That Need Summary | TV Tropes Forum | Know The StaffI feel for this wiki an affinity that borders on obsession, and I will tell you point blank that the kind of "knowledge" that you can garner from most of its pages is superficial and pedantic at best.
And better than thy stroke; why swellest thou then?@OP: No.
Frankly I think the whole "They only hate geeks because they're JELLUSSSSSSSS" is similar to how parents try to cheer up their kids by saying, "They're only bullying you because they want to be your friend" or something like that. It makes you feel important, even though it's so totally wrong.
Would you kindly click my dragons?
