I'd attempt to clear out the natter on this one, but I honestly don't know where to begin, and I don't think there'd be much left of the page afterwards anyway.

This is an example of a thread of natter from the page, and there are several more first-level bullets from which similarly gargantuan trees have grown:

  • No, Lucario is NOT a Legendary Pokemon, despite the fact that one has a place on the Super Smash Bros. Brawl roster, was featured alongside every other legendary yet released in the introductory animation of the tenth movie, and one that could talk actually had its own movie. And the fact that it was the most-hyped Pokémon introduced in the 4th generation. They can breed, come in both genders, evolve from a baby Pokémon and there's more than one in the game world. It appears the anime thinks Lucario is one, but in the games it isn't.
    • Arcanine is NOT a legendary. You can catch a Growlithe, and evolve it into an Arcanine. Got it?
      • It doesn't help that even the Pokédex calls it a legendary. (Though, to be fair, it WAS initially intended to be a legendary, alongside Articuno and Zapdos. They changed it because they thought people would be confused at the first legendary trio being two birds and a dog, as opposed to all birds.)
      • The real Gannon Ban involving Arcanine is that many people have a narrow view of what "Legendary" means. In the Japanese games, legendary actually has three distinct groups which were combined into a generic "Legendary" for American release. Most players only view Legendaries in a competitive battling, game mechanic way, when in actuality many other Pokémon are legendary (note the uncapitalized L) due to being the subject of legends in the game, rather than simply being ideal for battling.
        • In that way, some Pokémon that aren't legendary, battle-wise, are legendary in the second definition.
    • Also Rotom is not a legendary pokemon, despite the fact that it has the legendary pokemon theme during battle, and can only be fought after you defeat the Elite Four. It's just a normal Pokemon.
    • On a similar note, people tend to pronounce Pokémon as "Pokeman", "Pogimans", "Pokeymon", etc. It's Poh-kay-mon in English and, roughly, Poh-keh-mon in Japan. (The sound for E in Japanese doesn't normally occur in English, so it's pronounced a bit differently in English. An E in Japanese is somewhat similar to an E in Spanish.)
      • Mightyena is mighty + (h)yena. There is no reason it should rhyme with "henna". No matter what the various voice actors say. Also Growlithe is growl + lithe, Moltres is molt + tres, and Wormadam is worm + madam.
      • Similarly, contrary to what 4Kids suggested for years, it's not "ark-uh-nine" it's "ar-kay-nine". Y'know, as in "arcane" mixed with "canine"? You'd think 4Kids, with their hardon for horrible puns, would know that, but apparently not.
      • Raikou is pronounced "Rai-Ko", not "Rai-Koo" like 4Kids thinks.
      • According to the anime, Chimecho is pronounced CHIME-ECHO instead of CHIME-KO and Larvitar is pronounced LAR-VAY-TAR instead of LAR-VI-TAR.
      • On that note, no one's really sure how Regice is pronounced. (4Kids used Re-gi-ice, TP Ci uses Reg-ice.) The Japanese romanization is Reijiaisu, which supports 4Kids, but the lack of a second "i" leads most people to consider the PUSA pronunciation correct.
      • In Battle Revolution, Arceus is pronounced AR-see-us, with a soft c; but in the 12th movie, he is pronounced AR-key-us, with a hard c.
      • Then again, in the original Pokémon Stadium Ekans was pronounced EEK-ANS, even though on the anime it's pronounced ECK-ANS.
      • Which is funny, because in Stadium 1 while the announcer calls it the aforementioned "eek-ans", there is a mini-game in the same game featuring the snakes and every single one of them say their names as "eck-ans". Keep in mind, too, that ekans's name is "snake" backwards, not any play on the word "eek" and something else.
    • Be very careful with the spelling of pokemon names, as people can be merciless about it. It's Feraligatr, not Feraligator or Feraligater so long as Pokemon keeps the character cap the way it is. Ninetales is also not Ninetails any more than Seviper is Serviper (who, by the way, is not Arbok's evolution and has nothing to do with Sever).
    • The names of the player and his rival in the first generation games are Red and Blue, not Ash and Gary. And not Red and Green. However, in the original Japanese versions they were Red and Green, but Green's name was changed to Blue upon American release to match Blue version, since they didn't release Green version. And it is also Red and Blue in HeartGold and SoulSilver.
      • Same applies to Green himself, who keeps the name in the GBA games outside of Japan, too.
    • Likewise, it's Leaf. Not Blue or Green. It's in her dummy data and she was never implimented in the originals. Not all trios have a Theme Naming in the trios, as the Lyra-Ethan-Silver one proves, and even then it has a subtle Theme Naming in the west (leaves are often green). On the same note, "Gold" was never Ethan's name in Japan and the first female PC was given no name in Japan. But I wouldn't suggest you call her anything but Kris or Crystal, especially not "Lyra"
    • The rival in Pokemon Platinum is named Barry. His name is "Pearl" only if you're discussing Pokemon Special. In the same vein, the female player character is Dawn in the games, "Platinum" only, again, when talking about Pokemon Special.
      • Damion is still an accepted name for him, though not in wide use since Barry arrived in the anime.
      • And it's this naming scheme that might cause problems with Black and White, because people have already started calling the female PC "White".
    • If your Shellos or Gastrodon has a different color than others and doesn't shine, IT'S NOT A SHINY!
      • Same thing for Hippopotas and Hippowdon where the males are yellow and brown, the females are gray and black. They aren't shiny variations if they don't specifically shine.
    • Do not confuse counterparts for each other unless you're ready to get seriously ranted on by dozens of fans. Also, don't act like Pokemon Special is the only manga or the "true" (official) manga.

You know, I don't really like how the trope description describes the reaction people get from making an honest mistake. The title could very well be "Things That People Tend To Get Wrong" with the description being Exactly What It Says on the Tin, and the examples section wouldn't look too out of place.

I suggest moving the examples to a different page where the description would be more appropriate, while keeping the Gannon-Banned page as a description while having the Troper Tales page hold personal stories of getting flamed for making a mistake.

It's about a fandom overreaction to an honest mistake. It's not about the mistake itself.

Which is why all the examples mocking the mistake itself need to be rewritten.

The examples should be moved to a different page, with some rewriting to clean them up.

Gannon-Banned should only have examples in the Troper Tales page, since the reaction itself can only be experienced by fans. Having examples for what the mistakes may be can't effectively convey what the reaction is supposed to be, only predictions as to what may cause them.

We can record fan reactions, though. "Zelda Wiki Number 73 has an official policy of banning anyone who misspells it 'Gannon' " is not troper tales.

Did some pruning.

Most of the "It's X, NOT Y!" and "People get this wrong." examples are gone. I'm sure I missed some garbage, but what's left should at least mention fan reaction to the issue; that said, most of these examples probably still need to be rewritten to be more focused on the reaction. Much more in the way of specific examples might be helpful.

Natter's been nuked. I summarized when I was sufficiently familiar with the fandom, but that wasn't very often.

The description needs work badly, especially in the clarification department.

About Rotom? I think you're wrong. If it was a normal Pokemon, then why is there never any mention of multiple Rotoms ever? Also, I like to call Lucario a semi-Legendary; really rare, but not one of a kind.

[up]The OP copied that in from the article, as an example of how horrible it was. They weren't actually making any of those claims, or having a natter-fueled argument with themselves.

Just finished pruning down the wicks, will correct any asymmetry later.

The only article using "Bannondorf" is, well, YMMV Redirects. Do we actually need this as a redirect?

Now that Troper Tales is likely to get cut, how does that affect this discussion? There won't be any place on this site to put examples. It might be a good thing to take to the forums though.

I'm disappointed at what happened to this page. Previously I found it to be a highly entertaining and informational catalog of fandom berserk buttons, many of which I never would have figured out on my own. Sure, the tone was a little negative and could have used a rewrite, take out all the "Do NOT X" and make them read a little less like bullying, but the subject matter itself I didn't find offensive at all.

This is another loss I'm saddened by...
