I'd rather not watch someone fall apart on stage unless they have done something to deserve it. And I pretty sure that she hasn't.
Yeah, I agree — I originally wanted to add a link to it in my previous post, but after having seen thirty seconds of it on youtube I decided that it was not something I cared to see further or to inflict on others.

And while I can understand the spectators or the organizers being pissed off at her — after all, they spent a lot of money for something that ended up being a failure — laughing at her or making unimaginative jokes about self-destructive musicians sounds rather uncharitable to me.

"It doesn't matter if it happened IN or out of Serbia, the point is there were a few Serbian blokes inclined to genocide during a certain period. Of course the Nazi's were alright during WW 2, I mean most massacres didn't happen IN Germany."

Oh, so here we are, Nazis. Really?

From "massacre in Serbia", to "a few Serbian blokes" and now to Nazis...yeah...

I really don't want to derail this thread, but you should really stop talking. "A few Serbian blokes" doesn't constitute the whole Serbian nation and all citizens of Serbia. Not all Serbians live in Serbia, and not all people who live in Serbia are of Serbian nationality. Yeah I can bet it's hard to wrap your head around that. But that's how countries and nationalities work in real world.

The massacre you are probably referring to was done IN Bosnia (if you can't tell by the name: it's a different country). And yes, it was done by "a few blokes" who were of Bosnian-Serbian origin and citizens of Bosnia, and those blokes have names and they are being persecuted for war crimes in Hague tribunal. And it all happened almost 20 years ago.

So please stop with generalization, dehumanization and chauvinism.

I'm not generalising, dehumanising or w/e the Serbs. If I thought all Serbs are mass murders I would have said just "serbs" instead of "a few blokes". And I don't think I said you were nazi's. What I'm saying is that you shouldn't jump on a person and call him an ignorant idiot because he says he's frightened by the fact that people deny that a massacre happened "IN Serbia" instead of "by some people of Serbian origin".

Yeah. Huge lapse of mind on my part. It happens a lot. Meant to to say Muslims by Serbians.

Still disturbed though.

I didn't pay too much attention to the responses - which one was it? The first or the second?

Yes, and how are either of those two things relevant to an Amy Winehouse performance? Should TV Tropes preface each anime review with jokes about the Rape of Nanking? Don't drag this discussion farther down than it needs to be by invoking Godwin's Law, of all things.

@56

This topic is about comments Handler made of serbs, not Amy Winehouse.

I should think it would be apparent to someone so well versed in the subjects of this thread that I am speaking of the impropriety and irrelevance of Handler's comments during a pop culture segment.

It's comedy. Screw propriety and taste. Your mileages just happened to vary, which is unfortunate for you, but that's about it.

On topic, though... I can see where some outrage comes from, but at the end of the day, it's Chelsea Handler. One alleged "comedian" making asinine remarks is nothing to get offended over. Hell I hear people make anti-American remarks all the time, yet I shrug it off. Point is, a comedian saying stupid things really ain't worth getting worked up over.

See, that's the problem I have with this. She's a bad comedian in my opinion.

One alleged "comedian" making asinine remarks is nothing to get offended over.
Well, she made asinine remarks about a country which had some recent, complex and very troubling events in its past.

So it's not a surprise that the people of that country may get somewhat annoyed at a member of a country which fought against Serbian military*

less than twenty years ago saying that the whole country of Serbia is "a disappointment".

Also, and more in general, the way in which some Northern European and Northern American people look down to Eastern European countries gets annoying, quickly. I find it grating, and I am not even from any of these countries.

As I had to explain to someone recently, for example, yes, the Czech Republic is a civilized country. And a damn beautiful one, at that — I would have no problems at moving there, while I might have second thoughts about moving to, say, New York.

Depends on how you look at it. Yeah, there are some similarities between the Balkans and Mexico, but it still cannot be said that it's "like Mexico".

There are some similarities between the Moon and Mexico, too, I suppose. tongue

Having never been in Mexico, I do not know how it compares to Europe; but in any case, in my experience (I have never been in the Balkans, but I am otherwise relatively well traveled) Eastern Europe is actually reasonably prosperous and a pleasant place overall. Yeah, it is not perfect, and yeah, it is not as rich as Northern Europe, but the difference is not as big as one would think. And the capitals are magnificent.

I hear that Moldavia and Belarus are in a much more difficult situation at the moment; but if someone talks about, let's say, Hungary or Poland as if they were some sort of godforsaken corner of Commieland then this person does not have much of a clue.

[up][up]So, I'm supposed to tell of the similarities between the Balkans and Mexico? Well, the average quality of life is similar, there is a great difference in the mentality, economic power and the quality of life in the country and the city, the government is corrupt, the general mentality is similar, people love hot peppers and... that's about it, really.
