How easily could a police officer find closed missing child cases from eight years ago? One of my characters is investigating a kidnapping where two 11 year old boys took a guy and held him prisoner for 8 years, and he suspects they may have run away briefly in order to grab the guy.

Also, how easy would it be for him to access school records for kids around that age from eight years ago? His other possibility is that they lived near enough to go to the scene of the crime without arousing concern.

If I'm asking for advice on a story idea, don't tell me it can't be done.

It depends. First on what the time setting is, and second on the quality of the record archives.

If it's new enough, you could have the school computerize everything and back it up, or you could have it buried in dusty files, or...

It's a few years in the future. The original kidnapping would have happened around now.

I can get transcripts from my sophomore year of high school which was about six years ago. So, pulling up records a few years from now should be easy as long as they have a full name and a prior computerized database. Also, possibly, a warrant of some sort.
