Because I like to amuse myself, I want to create two background characters that are from another time period, and I settled on two teenagers from the 90s. I know nothing about them, just that one of them is probably going to be wearing braces.

So, I was wondering if anyone who actually, you know, was aware of the culture during that time, could possibly suggest themes or duos that were popular?

The only ones I know are Beevis and Butthead, and Bill and Ted, but I am not to keen on drawing on either of those for traits.

Do they have to be boys/men?

The first ones that came to mind were Daria and Jane, Enid and Becca from Ghost World, and the two female leads from Reality Bites. They're all pretty much the anti-Beavis and Butthead, Bill and Ted, Wayne and Garth, etc.

I'd like one guy due to author appeal, but I'm not too picky. Hell, if it's a two girl duo, I get to gender bend them.

Ah. The ones I named were just really snarky, smart, and savvy. I kind of threw them out if you wanted Bill-Ted alternatives, but the gender isn't exclusive.

Hm, I'd rather have people more likely to be a Fish Out Of W Ater sort, than Savvy.

Okay, never mind then.

I'm not sure if there is any big cliched character like that, besides the occasional character in something like Saved By The Bell that pops in for a handful of episodes.

The ones that I'm thinking of were always sort of...faux tough, you know? The wear a lot of leather and pretend to be street-smart, but all they never do more than pull a few pranks on the protagonists before they leave.

And, admittedly I'm seventeen so I'm not a big '90s kid, but my parents are Gen Xers who remember watching the earliest seasons of The Real World, and a huge "out of water" stereotype they used to make fun of was the sort of small-town person who would move into the house with minimal cultural awareness or social skills.

Watch Linkara from That Guy With The Glasses.com's reviews with 90s Kid in them. He is basically every 90s cliche I know of.

Alternately, watch Space Jam, then Fresh Prince of Bel Air, then listen to Hardline's I'll Be There while playing with a Generation 2 Transformer/Action Man figure. That'll get you in a 90s mood, no trouble.
