Lady Luck usually gets some help from Mr. Stats.
UN JOUR JE SERAI DE RETOUR PRÈS DE TOII think it's fine, really. Not having to worry about the action gives you more time and brain RAM to worry about other stuff. As long as that is actually used, the game is just fine being turn-based.
I love me a good turn-based RPG. Fallout, Jagged Alliance 2 and FF Tactics are some of my favourite games.
KOTOR II.

UN JOUR JE SERAI DE RETOUR PRÈS DE TOIProvided the attack animations are reasonably short, I have no problem with it
I'm not a big fan of the final fantasy style of turn based combat but I really love turn based strategy games.
Love it. I like having time to think. I think making you do everything and make decisions faster can sometimes be considered a form of Fake Difficulty.
I love games like Final Fantasy Tactics, Fire Emblem and Advance Wars. Gives you time to think. Let's you work everything out.
Revnant Wings would have been so much better if it was turn based.
Mega Man fanatic extraordinaireIt's okay for me. It's less hassle than pressing millions of buttons at the same time despite liking that as well.
"Liar liar on the wall, give the world to me..."I'm nose-deep in Disgaea on my DS and wish more games of the series were released on consoles I own.
"And as long as a sack of shit is not a good thing to be, chivalry will never die."Time to finally invest in a PSP then?
As long as the battle system is interesting and/or the game has at least a decent amount of challenge to it, Turn Based games are just peachy to me.
Taking a break from FE1, for the FE8 draft insteadI'm fond of both turn-based combat and strategy. I've played a lot of Final Fantasy (only IV and VI) and Disgaea, as well as X-Com, Dragon Quest and Sid Meier's Civilization.
Okay, fine! I'm going to do something I'm sort of good at!Luck is no more a factor in turn-based strategy than it is in real-time strategy, really. Anyway, I do like the pace of turn-based games, since I have all the time in the world to analyze the current situation and choose my actions. I regularly play the Disgaea and Super Robot Wars games, and I love seeing the scripted attack animations. Should they ever get boring, I can always turn them off.

The problem I have with turn based games is when the developers try to make it harder by having more enemies which makes the ratio between playing and waiting 1:10 which is really annoying. otherwise TB is quite ok.
In the quiet of the night, the Neocount of Merentha mused: How long does evolution take, among the damned?I have a love hate relationship with turn based gameplay. I don't like the idea that it's my character improving and not me as a gamer. I don't like not being in control of how much damage I do/ absorb or whether or not I even get hit.
But in games like Roguelikes, It feels pretty awesome to cheat death with proper improvisation and strategizing.

ALL CREATURE WILL DIE AND ALL THE THINGS WILL BE BROKEN. THAT'S THE LAW OF SAMURAI.I love menu-based combat (it's pretty much what I'm known for on IRC). I actually don't like normal turn-based combat that much since there's a large part of the turn where you're simply watching animations, but I do like the Action Time Battle and Conditional Turn Based systems of Final Fantasy, along with turn-based strategy like Fire Emblem and Valkyria Chronicles. In particular, I love customization of abilities and lots of side quests. I really like Final Fantasy IV DS because I had so much fun with the augment system. Also, despite my love for RP Gs, I rarely care for the stories in them.
Tldr; I'm weird because I play JRP Gs for the gameplay.
Welcome to th:|I prefer Turn Based Actions over real time, mostly because the former requires the player to use their head more often, and the latter have a tendency to end up being a Button Masher or a duck and cover type of game.
As for the whole Lady Luck thing, real time gameplay is afflicted by it quite a lot too* , although skill and stats still play a much bigger role just like in turn based games.
"Every opinion that isn't mine is subjected to Your Mileage May Vary."I wonder why noone else has implemented the battle system from the Mario RPGs, as far as I know at least. It's turn-based, not unlike many other menu based RPG combat systems, but with well-timed input a player can dodge enemy moves and make their own attacks more effective. I like the system a lot.

We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.Mother 3 has a timing based combo system and a system that allows healing even after taking fatal damage.
Vagrant Story has a timing based combo system and a timing based counter attack system(containing an ability that allows you to heal after taking fatal damage).

Umbran Climax◊You don't have to be completely idle during enemy turns, for example, you might have lots of AP stored up for reaction fire if you planned ahead, or push the enemy into a corner where they end up provoking attacks of opportunity. Also, some turn based games have simultaneous resolution, such as most roguelikes, so that nobody has to sit through anyone else's turn.

There are quite a few interesting turn based combat systems around in both western and eastern RP Gs.
Even games with wildly different interpretations of the same system.
Umbran Climax◊That kind of Turn Base Action? I do admit,it's pretty fun if done right. Since there's also an element of planning what you will do as well as predicting what your enemy will do as well.
It's what made EO and ARF so fun. Of course, theres also Izuna The Legend Of The Unemployed Ninja.
An exception to this rule might be Neverwinter Nights pausable realtime. In theory, it's kinda cool, letting you pause the action to issue more specific commands, while making people think it's a realtime combat. In practice...USE ALL YOUR MOST POWERFUL SPELLS, win battle!, rest to replenish all the spells, rinse and repeat, beat game!
I think NWN's problem isn't it's battle system not being complete enough, but rather your characters become far too powerful far too easily.

"Every opinion that isn't mine is subjected to Your Mileage May Vary."I want to bloody stab people who claim that turn-based is now and forever obsolete. It's not a limitation in processing power people, it's a style of game and it's NOT OBSOLETE.
"But don't give up hope. Everyone is cured sooner or later. In the end we shall shoot you." - O'Brien, 1984Eh. I prefer action based systems. Turn-based combat gets hella boring for me after a while.

Those that play RPG's and the like, how do you feel about Turn-Based Actions?
I, personality, am not really fond of just having my Avatar just stand in one place and let Lady Luck decide whether it hits or miss. But, that is just me.
Yep, I'm still here.
